Fillory is real! And Penny went there! At least Quentin thinks so. When Quentin is unable to offer any advice on how to NOT get eaten by The Beast, Penny and Kady leave Q to wallow in the fact that Penny got to go to Fillory, not him.

Kady and Penny complete the ink spell that will tether Penny's body to earth. During this, Kady let's down some of her guards and tells Penny a bit about where she comes from.

Julia's search for a new hedge leads her down a dark alley. And...someone is following her. Who is this lady? After Julia gets the jump on her and demands answers, the mystery woman reveals that she too was banished by Marina. Could she be a new ally?

Something's afoot at the physical kids cottage. Eliot and Margo and the other upperclassmen have kidnapped ALL the first for years for something called "The Trials." If they can't pass this challenge they get kicked out of Brakebills for good.

The mystery woman turns out to be named Hannah and she wants to join forces with Julia. She has traveled the world trying to find new spells and offers them to Julia if they can do some magic together. Once they do, Julia decides that these few spells aren't enough and maybe it's time to figure out how to get the spells Marina stole from Brakebills.

The trials have begun! The first task Q and company perform is to translate and cast some 100 year old spells - the whole idea of the trials is to think like a magician, SO Q and Penny decide to cheat, using Penny's astral projection power to copy off the smartest person in the room. Alice (duh).

Hannah reaches out to someone with whom she has "history" - her daughter, KADY! Kady says she wont help the two and tells Julia why Hannah was really banished, a spell gone wrong that killed two people. This is also why Kady has to steal stuff for Marina. (Dramz!)

Is it just us, or can Margo be kind of sweet sometimes.? Oh… no. It's just us. After she gives Quentin a pep talk about how he should be downstairs celebrating that he passed the first trial, she offers him a bottle of champagne. That's DEFINITELY full of drugs.

As Julia attempts a spell to steal Marina's files, Hannah shows up and saves her right before she's about to blow herself up. Still reeling from all the info Kady let slip, Julia is very hesitant when Hannah begs to help her with the spell.

The team arrive in the middle of a forest where Eliot gives them a teamwork task - with a little communication, they pass the second trial! Huzzah!

Julia agrees to let Hannah help her cast the spell so that they can rescue Kady from Marina's clutches. And you know what the crazy thing is? The spell seems to actually be working.

It's time for the third and final trial. The remaining first years are told that the last trial is to reveal their truest self to another magical adept. But like, TOTALLY reveal themselves. Like all naked and stuff. Once they pass the trial, their ropes will fall off.

Back at Brakebills, our favorite first years try to pass the third trial. Penny tells Kady that he's falling in love with her and his ropes fall off (n'awwwwww). Kady in turn tells Penny that she's been using him to steal stuff and her ropes fall off (n'aww, wait, uh-oh).

Things aren't going great for Alice and Quentin who, as the clock strikes midnight, are still in ropes. Alice tells Q that she holds back with her magic everyday for fear that she'll be branded a freak, but she knows deep down inside, she's powerful. Quentin tells Alice how he's constantly running away from himself cause he's really just a scared little boy and OH GOD WHY ARE THEY TURNING INTO BIRDS?!
