The team gathers around the cottage to discuss their game plan for dealing with The Beast. According to the pages Penny stole from the library, the team realizes that they need the Leo Blade, which can kill pretty much anything. In order to find that, they’re going to head to, yep, Fillory.

But! It turns out that the deaths were all just part of a probability spell. The gang has learned that in every probable scenario, The Beast comes and kills everyone in the next week – unless they follow Quentin’s plan to use the blade to kill The Beast.

Meanwhile, the team trying to contact a God decide to work their way up the magical creature food chain until they find someone who can contact a deity. And also? It turns out Julia is special – she’s God-touched. She can conjure up a spirit faster than the others.

Penny and all the other travelers have started to hear the voice of The Beast in their heads because they’re basically gateways to Fillory. Many of the travelers are committing suicide over it, including Joe the Sex Therapist and Penny’s mentor.

When the team decides to learn battle magic before their trip to Fillory, they learn they can’t without someone who already knows how. And that means Kady. With Penny’s help, they travel to meet Kady – at Julia’s place.

Penny has been driven bonkers by the noises of The Beast. He collapses after doing a TON of drugs and is visited by Professor Sunderland, who arrives with a way to block the noise in Penny’s head. It’s illegal, but it works.

So, it turns out in order to do battle magic, one must clear their heads of emotions. And since that usually takes years of meditation, they choose instead to literally bottle their emotions up. And boy howdy, are these people no fun without their emotions.

After a quick stop at a vampire bar, Julia and Kady go on a search for a magical creature that can point them to a God. They find one masquerading as Kady’s mom. She tells them the Gods are all dead.

Turns out bottling up your emotions and practicing some battle magic works pretty well for the team. They’re able to pull off some complicated spellwork.

But wow, when those emotions return, it’s like feeling them all at once and it wrecks everyone.

Alice and Penny decide that they may be able to navigate battle magic without having to bottle up their emotions. So they meet in the woods and decide to give it a try. Not surprisingly, as they’re over achievers, it goes pretty well.

Back at Julia’s place, after saying a few prayers, Julia is visited by "The Lady Underground” who points Julia in the direction for summoning her. It’s a religious experience, and exactly the kind of break everyone in Julia's group was hoping for.

Reeling from another late night practice session that messed with their emotions, Quentin, Eliot, and Margo get rip roaring drunk and make a pretty serious mistake.

When Alice discovers that Quentin slept with Margo and Eliot, her heart is broken completely. And also? The Beast is still inbound. Yikes.
