A magician named Daniel had Penny and Marina kidnapped. Why? Turns out the fact that they are from alternate timelines is messing with his time magic. And he wants them out of timeline 40. After some timeline jumping, they end up away from their captor, but in a very martial law time. Oops.

Quentin and Julia decide to help the Monster, aka Evil Eliot, build the body he wants to create. They hope to come up with a plan to save the real Eliot while appeasing Darth Eliot. Next step: work to decipher the heiroglyphs on the stones that Evil Eliot takes when he kills the gods and goddesses.

Alice lands in sunny Modesto, where she rents a room from Sheila and then tries to figure out why she is there.
424087
Could it be because her new landlord has awesome, money-finding magic powers? Alice thinks that might be why she is there: To help her new friend develop her powers. And perhaps to protect her from the librarians who will come knocking at her door...

In Fillory, Margo is on a mission to get the talking animals to speak again. There is an antidote that should heal them, but they need beet juice from a remote isle. And a not-super-cooperative lady is in charge of that. So Margo is working on her diplomacy.

In alt-timeline-land, Penny and Marina seek out their alt-captor, Daniel, to help them jump home thanks to his invention. The one that they know about because of the other timelines, but Daniel doesn't know that. It's complex. When his mom comes in and faints, they jump to Timeline 40.

Turns out, Daniel is just trying to save his time-magic-manipulating mom. And their bouncing around the timelines is making her sick. When they confront her about this, it becomes clear that she knows the dangers and chooses to work the magic anyway. So they can't help her.

At a museum where Julia and Eliot are doing hieroglyph research, Evil Eliot appears to complain about things taking too long. So he animated a mummy to give them helpful info. Turns out, they are looking for the god Heka for the next stone. He died and was buried in a temple that was looted. So... that's the next clue. Thanks, Mummy!

Margo really wants those beets. After some lovely and patient diplomacy -- which included having to drink Alpaca milk -- she loses her patience and goes with threats and force. It works.

Alice has been training Sheila in her magical capabilities. Sheila mentions that the town's water is contaminated by lead with corroded pipes, and also that she can sense a leak of ambient magic within the community. They suss it out, and Alice causes the magic to leak out even more.
424096
Alice and Sheila then use that magic to fix the pipes and clean the water for the entire town of Modesto. And Alice is thrilled to be using magic for good without evil aftereffects.

Evil Eliot is damaging Eliot's body with drugs and alcohol. Quentin is furious and issues him an ultimatum: If he does not take care of Eliot's body then he will abandon him and not help him on his quest. After Quentin's standing up to him, Evil Eliot backs down and agrees to be good to the meat suit.
424098
Margo, in a rage spiral at Josh after he praised her diplomacy and compared her to Eliot, lashes out hard. She is exceptionally cruel to him, and their flicker of a romance is stomped out.

Penny 23 is in Timeline 40, and Daniel finally catches up to him. Penny explains that he understands why he is doing this, but there are bigger things in play and he can't leave the timeline. He's blown seeds from a different timeline all around so that Daniel can never fully "clean" the timeline and will stop chasing him. It's over.

But oh, how are things in Modesto? Well, maybe not great. The hedge witches got some of that ambient magic and went with a whole vengeance angle. They blew up the library with some Librarians inside. And there are other Librarians knocking on Sheila's door. What's next??!!
