At this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and producers of The Magicians dazzled with thoughtful answers, comic relief, and a tease of Season 5! Here were our main takeaways:

How to Watch

Catch up on The Magicians on the SYFY app.

1 . Season 5 will introduce new characters

The show confirmed that the next season will feature new characters portrayed by Yetide Badaki of American Gods and Sean Maguire of Once Upon a Time!

2. There’s a brand-new sneak peek clip from Season 5

The new 4-minute clip, taken from the first episode of the upcoming season, takes place in Julia’s kitchen, where she finds an odd pig-man (played by esteemed and aforementioned newcomer Sean Maguire!) raiding her fridge. He proposes to her a quest: help him track down Quentin. He breaks down upon learning that Quentin is dead, and tells Julia that he’s up against something “apocalyptic in nature.”

3. Season 5 will feature another musical episode

If you enjoyed the musical episode in Season 4, buckle up. McNamara confirmed that Season 5 will feature something very similar.

“It’s going to be a little later in the season,” he said. “And all I can tell you is, it’s probably going to be our most plot-intensive musical.”

4. Arjun Gupta loves playing each Penny equally

When asked which version of Penny he liked to play best, Gupta replied that he couldn’t bear to decide, though he did add that “Penny-40 holds a special place in my heart because he was the first.”

5. The cast members love having their own personal fan bases

Hudley: “I love my Alices! They always bring it with the dresses at Comic-Con.”

Worthy: “I think everyone I meet wants to drink with me. And I want to drink with them too.”

Appleman: “I’ve had the pleasure of meeting fans at mini cons. It means a lot to me to meet the kids who maybe a few years ago didn’t have representation of someone like me on TV. Queer kids mean a lot to me. Eliot means a lot to me. Thank you.”

6. The actors revealed their respective characters’ theme songs

Penny: “Something" by Wu-Tang

Josh: B.J. Thomas and Jennifer Warnes’s “As Long As We Got Each Other” (the Growing Pains theme)

Eliot: Laura Branigan’s “Gloria” or something off Kate Bush’s "Hounds of Love"

Alice: “Some really complex Classical song”

Julia: The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”

Fogg: The Cheers theme song

SYFY announced in January that The Magicians will return for Season 5. Henry Alonso Myers joins McNamara and Gamble as co-showrunner for the upcoming season, only on SYFY!
