The Witcher finally tosses a coin to Season 2 with full trailer for Netflix hit's long-awaited return

With the main cast getting new looks ahead of the second season of Netflix's hit The Witcher adaptation, fans knew that some big changes were in store for the fantasy series. Henry Cavill's Geralt (the Witcher himself) got decked out in some new armor, poor witchy Yennifer (Anya Chalotra) is in chains, and Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) is becoming a badass. Now, thanks to the first trailer for the show's sophomore effort, fans can see all these changes in action.

The story sees Geralt taking his ward, Ciri, back to where he was raised: Kaer Morhen. A perfect spot for some Witcher training and a safe haven for a pursued little girl. As far as anyone knows, Yenn got her magical goose cooked at the big battle at the end of the first season. But a season of training (and Yenn's journey to freedom) isn't all that the show has ready for fans.

Netflix rode into this week's Witchercon to reveal a Season 2 premiere date of Dec. 17 as The Witcher is joined by the new anime feature film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which sets up the backstory of elder Witcher Vesemir (played by Kim Bodnia in the live action series). That, of course, meant a first-look teaser trailer devoted to the movie — which seems to share some of the same awesome animated aesthetic that's made Netflix's Castlevania series such a blast to watch:

The main series is beefing up its cast this time around, adding the likes of Coen (Yasen Atour), Vereena (Agnes Bjorn), Lambert (Paul Bullion), Lydia (Aisha Fabienne Ross), Francesca (Mecia Simson), Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz), and more. Bodnia's Vesemir will be a key role as Geralt's mentor/father figure. Also, Game of Thrones' Kristofer Hivju is in the mix! Phew. Loads of new folks. But just keep looking at Cavill's luxurious locks and it'll all make sense.

Season 2 of The Witcher lands at Netflix on Dec. 17, while The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf starts streaming at the platform beginning Aug. 23.
