We'll see a less jaded Nick Fury in Captain Marvel
Last May, fresh off the tragedy experienced in the final moments of Avengers: Infinity War, we visited the set of Captain Marvel and spoke to Samuel L. Jackson about what it means for him to be in the first female-led Marvel film in his iconic role of Nick Fury.
Ever since his first MCU appearance in the post-credit scene of Iron Man, Nick Fury has been a connecting link between all of the Marvel heroes. But we've pretty much always seen him depicted in the same part of his life as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. In Captain Marvel, we're flashing back 30 years and seeing a slightly different version of the character, according to Jackson.
"Yeah, about 30 years younger. And not as jaded about the world yet. He hasn't grown into his cynicism quite yet," he said.
Jackson went on to explain how this impacts Fury's worldview and interactions with S.H.I.E.L.D. once he meets his very first superhero.
"He's not burdened by the weight of the world the way he is and he hadn't come to resent the powers that be in terms of how they view the world and how they view what he does," explained Jackson. "And the seriousness of the situation, they're totally unaware of it right now. So his next challenge is convincing them that we do need to enlist people who have extraordinary gifts that can help us defend not just the country but the world."
In addition to seeing Fury meet Carol Danvers, we'll also be getting a Fury origin story of sorts. We'll see him meeting Agent Coulson and what put him on the path to where we see him in current-day MCU films.
"We always… look forward to figuring out stuff that people don't know or might not understand or the, I guess the evolution of Nick Fury from desk jockey to Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. It's kind of fun," noted Jackson.
Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8.
