WATCH: The Star Trek: Discovery cast teases emotional journeys in Season 2

By Courtney Enlow

One of the most riveting plotlines in the first season of Star Trek: Discovery followed Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif) as he confronted L'Rell (Mary Chieffo) about his time as her prisoner. He recalled horrific abuse at L'Rell's hands, only to discover that he was actually a Klingon sleeper agent all along. That doesn’t immediately change their dynamic in the upcoming second season. However, SYFY WIRE recently caught up with Chieffo and Latif, and the two performers told us that Ash/Voq and L’Rell’s story will unfold in an emotionally satisfying way.

“It’s something that we continue to explore in the second season, which I am really proud about,” said Chieffo. “There are conversations that L’Rell and Tyler need to have ... and they happen. I think it’s a very, very complex issue that I feel very strongly about, and I hope that we will be able to satisfy fans that want to hear more on both characters’ sides of the story.”

Latif indicated that even after the reveal, there is still some confusion between Voq and L’Rell as to what their relationship actually is.

“We’ve got time ... to listen to each other rather than getting up in each others’ face,” explained Latif.

On a lighter topic, we also spoke to Doug Jones about the desire of his character, Saru, to become a Starfleet captain. His castmate, Mary Wiseman, also spoke to us at the same time about her role as Sylvia Tilly, and the unique bond she shares with Saru. Additionally, Jones also touched upon the introduction of Saru’s sister, which is going to happen this season. Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 will premiere Thursday, Jan. 17, on CBS All Access.
