important toy news

Welcome back to Important Toy News, the SYFY WIRE column that shows you all the best and coolest happenings in the world of amazing toys and collectibles for the week.

Get ready to make even more space on your shelves, my toy-collecting friends, and dive back into that toy box for another awesome week with your resident, and hopefully favorite, toy journalist. Together we shall experience the loss of our dollars and have tons of fun going broke from preorders galore! I’m not even kidding, I really, really went happy on the preorders this week. And speaking of happy, our first toy up will make you happy almost in a happy ... meal ... sort of way? Can you guess what it is?

I know, the hints I’m dropping are so vague and cryptic.

Funko Pop Ronald McDonald

EAT YOUR HEART OUT, HAPPY MEAL TOYS

I’m not even kidding when I say that as a kid, I worshiped McDonald’s. It was more than a good time for the great taste of McDonald’s; it was more than food, folks, and fun; it was more than I’m loving it; it may have had something to do with the romance of Mac Tonight busting a Peter Pan at your quiet, lonely window with promises of hamburgers, excitement, and adventure; it may even have been that, at McDonaldland, you dance, sing, go on trains, and are surrounded by wonderful and supportive friends, helmed by the friendly and charismatic Ronald McDonald, who makes sure the fun stops at noon for an awesome lunch every single day.

But whatever the reason, the advertising was brilliant, and today you can order Ronald McDonald, Grimace, The Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, or Officer Big Mac for $10.99 each and they will ship August 2020. Here’s hoping that Captain Crook, Birdie, and Mac Tonight will appear for Wave Two!

Funko Pop Homer Jack in the Box

TOYHOUSE OF HORRORS

Keeping it real with Funko, we have another incredible reveal happening today. It’s the newest wave of Funko’s The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror vinyl figures, and believe me, some of these are pretty tasty.

Ever since I was a wee one in the '90s, I tuned in for the very first Treehouse special from the show I was already obsessed with, and that excitement was life-changing. Funko has already released a few Treehouse of Horrors Pop! figures (Cat Marge, Fly Bart, Monster Maggie, and Devil Lisa), but it is so exciting to see these seven new pieces commemorated in vinyl form.

Each 3.75-inch toy costs $10.99 and will ship October 2020. You can choose from Jack in the Box Homer, Vampire Krusty, Bart With Chestburster Maggie, Devil Flanders, Zombie Bart, Reaper Homer, and Witch Marge.

Funko Art Deco Iron Man

MORE LIKE WOOD MAN AMIRITE?

Ever considered putting your whittling skills to good use but just couldn’t find the time? Well, neither could we. That’s where this fantastic Iron Man Wood Deco Pop! Vinyl Figure – Entertainment Earth Exclusive comes to the rescue. According to Funko, the figure employs a “specialized paint technique that gives a carved-wood appearance to the fan-favorite Avenger, and just like real wood, the 'grain' design varies on each figure so no two are identical!”

Measuring approximately 3 3/4 inches tall, Tony Stark comes packaged in a cool window display box. Art Deco Iron Man costs $14.99, ships September 2020, and is available for preorder today.

Playmobil Scooby Doo and the Mystery Mansion

PLAYMOOBY-DOO!

Fans rejoice, we have another amazing set coming from the incredible people at Playmobil! I am in complete awe of the Scooby-Doo, Ghostbusters, and Back to the Future sets from this mind-blowing brand, and I can’t wait to see this set for myself!

Scooby-Doo, Fred, and Daphne are on the case to investigate the secrets that lie inside the Mystery Mansion. Spooky surprises await them in shadowy corners and creaky corridors, and nothing should be overlooked. A trap door, dangling chandelier, secret hideouts, hidden doors, and a trick staircase will keep the gang on their toes. With the help of the Playmobil app, ghosts and ghouls can be projected as a hologram on the ground floor.

This set costs $99, but for the complete product lineup of all things Playmobil and Scooby-Doo, click here and see which set will help you solve all of the gang’s mysteries!

Hasbro BAF MMPR Megazord

MEGATOYD

Megazord sequence has been initiated! As a lover of robots (and an avid Megazord collector), I have only one thing to say about Hasbro’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Build-a-Megazord reveal and live preorders: It’s about freakin’ time!

So, what do we have here? Three packages, each retailing for $15.99, with one or two pieces of the Megazord. You can either keep them in alt mode, or build them up into Megazord Sequence, and voilà, we have a giant robot.

For about $50 (after tax), we will have a robot (likely around the 12-inch scale) that looks like a high-quality kids' toy, but not an adult collectible. I have many MMPR Megazords of varying quality, and if this dude looks good on my shelf and blends with the Bandai versions, I’m happy! You can buy the Tyrannosaurus Rex Dinozord, the Mastodon and Pterodactyl Dinozord, and the Sabertooth Tiger and Triceratops Dinozords.

They are all set to ship August 2020, and I will then build my robot and give it a hug.

Super7 Thundercats LionO

LION-TOY

ThunderCats, ho!

Don’t miss the ThunderCats 3 3/4-Inch ReAction Figures. From Super7, the ThunderCats heroes and villains are joining the ReAction retro figure line. These 3 3/4-inch plastic action figures come packaged on a 6-inch by 9-inch cardback. Based on the classic animated series, these toys feature five points of articulation and come with a weapon.

With this new wave, you can choose from Cheetara, Lion-O, Jackalman, Panthro, Mumm-Ra, and Slithe.

A LITTLE PRINCE JOHN

We’ve reached the end, my toy-loving friends, and we may have saved the best for last. Super7 is showing off an enchanting classic that will make Disney fans lose their minds.

Adding to the Ultimates Collection, Super7 is showing off Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey, Pinocchio, and Prince John from Robin Hood. I honestly think the Prince John is going to do me in — you’ll never see a Prince John figure like this again, and I am stoked that Disney gave Super7 permission to make toys like these!

That Prince John has a dirty thumb, you know.

Each Disney Classic Animation Ultimates figure is 7 inches tall and comes with many heads, hands, and accessories. They cost $45 apiece and are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2021.
