The Umbrella Academy trailer is a torrential mashup of Wes Anderson and superheroics
Whenever there's a storm threatening humanity, The Umbrella Academy gathers over our heads in order to prevent us from getting drenched in total annihilation.
Today, Netflix released a brand-new trailer for its adaptation of the popular graphic novels by writer Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance) and artist Gabriel Bá. The wacky sci-fi series stars Ellen Page, Robert Sheehan, Mary J. Blige, and Cameron Britton.
Check out the latest trailer below, which offers us our first good look at the talking CGI chimp, Pogo (voiced by Adam Godley).
As some have pointed out online, the show looks like Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums with a sci-fi/comic book slant, and we’re 100% on board for something like that.
The Umbrella Academy centers on a family of dysfunctional superheroes. As kids, they protected the Earth from devastation under the guidance of their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a philanthropist, inventor, and space alien. The children were mysteriously born at the exact same time from separate mothers, who showed no signs of pregnancy on the day they gave birth.
In the comics, the children come together years later after the passing of Hargreeves, whom they all despise for being emotionally distant. He only gave them designated numbers as names and never allowed them to call him "dad." This side of the character is evident in the trailer when Hargreeves (also known as "The Monocle") asks one of the mothers "How much do you want for it?"
Tom Hopper, Aidan Gallagher, Colm Feore, John Magaro, Ashley Madekwe, and Kate Walsh are also a part of the show's cast.
Developed by Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon), Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy premieres on Netflix on Feb. 15. In terms of plot, it looks like the story will be a mix of the first two storylines: "Apocalypse Suite" and "Dallas." The third storyline in the series, "Hotel Oblivion," is currently running and will be collected in a trade paperback this summer.
