The Rock and Jason Statham fight supervillain Idris Elba in trailer for Hobbs & Shaw

The Fast and the Furious film franchise started out as a series of movies about illegal street racing. In the nearly 20 years since the first installment was released, though, the franchise has significantly evolved, to the point that the insane action setpieces and incredible endurance of its characters mean that the latest films are just a few scenes shy of a superhero movie.

With the series' first spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw, that already blurred line seems to disappear altogether.

The film features a team-up between two men who've long been at odds with each other: Diplomatic Security Service Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) and MI6 agent turned mercenary Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). Hobbs and Shaw have been on opposite sides of the fight before, but they've teamed up in the past when they had to, most recently in Fate of the Furious. Now they'll have to work together again to bring down Brixton (Idris Elba), a criminal mastermind who's used some kind of enhancement tech to make himself "bulletproof" and impossibly strong.

That's right, folks. Idris Elba is a full-blown supervillian, and only Statham and The Rock can stop him. That doesn't mean they have to be happy about it, though.

The buddy cop vibes, along with an assist from Mission: Impossible - Fallout co-star Vanessa Kirby and Elba's full-blown evil genius make this look like a must-see for the summer. The Furious franchise has been upping the ante with each passing installment for years now, and it doesn't look like the spinoffs will be slowing down even a little bit.

Fast & Furious Present: Hobbs & Shaw is in theaters Aug. 2.
