DC FanDome: Andy Muschietti says his Flash movie will be both funny and terrifying
Come float with us, Barry Allen... Answering fan questions at DC FanDome's second day, director Andy Muschietti promised that his Flash movie would be similar to his approach for adapting Stephen King's It.
“My Flash is not gonna be light or dark in tone, it’s gonna have everything," the filmmaker said. "If you saw my previous movies like It and It [Chapter] 2, you’ll notice that I like to put everything in it. What you will see in Flash is a very deep, emotional story, but it’s also gonna very funny and a great, epic adventure at the same time. [But] also terrifying for some of the time … get ready."
During the first day of FanDome, fans learned that the script (written by Birds of Prey's Christina Hodson) will open the door for a wider DC Multiverse on the big screen. In terms of story, the project will lean heavily on the Flashpoint storyline, which involves Barry preventing the death of his mother, but seriously messing up reality in the process. For his standalone feature, Allen (played by Ezra Miller) is getting a brand-new costume designed by Bruce Wayne.
"I have yet to see, but I have heard some things about it and they’re extremely exciting," Miller said while answering a fan question today. "There will be some twists in some ways. I believe it will be a more traditional comic-based costumes. But in other ways, I think it might be somewhat unconventional. I’ve heard that it’ll potentially be lighter weight than my last suit."
It's been confirmed that Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton will be appearing in the movie as two separate versions of Batman. Whether we'll see other heroes (like Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa's Aquaman, and Ray Fisher's Cyborg) remains to be seen. Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup are expected to reprise their Justice League roles of Iris West (making her debut in the upcoming Snyder Cut) and Henry Allen (Barry's incarcerated father) respectively.
"I want you to go see it, so I am not gonna tell you a lot," said producer Barbara Muschietti, who is also the director's sister. "What I will tell you is that it's a ride. It's gonna be fun and exciting and there are a lot of DC characters in it. Flash is the superhero of this film because he is the bridge between all of these characters and timelines. In a way, it restarts everything and doesn't forget anything."
The Flash is currently scheduled to run into theaters June 3, 2022. Production is hoping to kick off in early 2021.
