Karl Urban discusses the even darker bulldog-filled depths of The Boys Season 2 at C2E2

By Jacob Oller
The Boys Season 2

Let's hear it for The Boys! Yes, the grimy, hilarious Amazon adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic is about to enter its second season, which means that the superhero takedown show is only going to get nastier. That means its cast -- playing characters like Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso), Homelander (Anthony Starr), Starlight (Erin Moriarty), and Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) -- have answers to fans' burning questions. Kicking off the hype train for the second season, the actors spoke on their C2E2 panel about what all's to come on the gore-filled series.

Like, for instance, the fact that Butcher's wife, Becca (Shantel VanSanten), is not only alive but raising the super-powered son she had with Homelander. Ouch. Fans got a glimpse of all the fallout in the first teaser for the show's second season, but despite the series having wrapped production, they have yet to get a full trailer or release date. However, the cast first touched on a few details about their relationships with the show in general.

"I think the success of films like Deadpool proves there is an audience for R-rated superhero material," Urban said. Alonso explained that he's OCD in real life, so on set he's the person that's straightening up the set after the rest of the cast wrecks it take after take. "The original version of the script that I was given for the pilot did not have that [#MeToo] storyline," Moriarty said of her character's arc dealing with the sexual assault and discrimination she faces from her male superhero colleagues. She was, however, excited to tackle the "brave" storyline when it was added. She was less excited about the bowling lessons she had to take in order to shoot her bowling scenes because she was so awful beforehand. But what about the future storylines?

When asked about how his wife's reveal affects Billy, Urban said, "Season 2, that's what we're going to explore -- the rape of it all." Calling Homelander "America's favorite rapist," Urban said that the second season will only get bigger and better, with deeper characterizations ... and one scene where Alonso ate ten donuts. As far as who these characterizations actually are, aside from the cast on stage, Starr confirmed that "Black Noir is a f***ing force in Season 2," while Urban was thrilled to reveal that Terror, Butcher's bulldog, is coming to Season 2. Other details from the upcoming episodes included the "disparity" between Moriarty's strength and that of her character Starlight causing a few problems with directors asking for more takes simply because they saw her exerting too much doing something benign, like opening a door.

Not much else was divulged, but the entire cast also hinted at one particular scene in the second season that fans would know when they saw it. How does a show that has superhero murder sex escalate? It's unclear -- but the cast was unanimous about it being a standout from S2.

IDW is also going back to The Boys with the upcoming April comic The Boys: Dear Becky, with the show returning to Amazon later this year.
