Stargirl gazes toward Season 2 as Geoff Johns teases more Grundy and Eclipso

Stargirl has been a cosmic blast of fresh air at The CW, importing a different spin on superhero stories from its original home at DC Universe. The Geoff Johns-created comic book series has settled into orbit amid the network’s constellation of Arrowverse shows, hitting a sweet mix of classic comic book heroics and teenage melodrama.

With the series’ first season kicking off earlier this year and a Season 2 renewal already set at The CW, the cast got together at DC FanDome to tease some stellar previews of what lies ahead for Courtney Whitmore and the gang in not-so-sleepy Blue Valley, Nebraska.

After an intense look back at the epic Season 1-crowning battle between the JSA and Solomon Grundy, Johns suggested that it’s not the last time the CGI zombie terror will show up as Stargirl gazes toward its second season.

“I’m excited for people to see more Grundy. He’s not gone just yet,” Johns teased, drawing a smattering of oohs and ahhs from the cast. Also likely to step into the spotlight as a new on-deck Injustice Society villain is Eclipso, teased in the S1 finale when Cindy Burman (played by Meg DeLacy) spies the shattered spirit lurking inside a mysterious black diamond.

“I think one of the important things at the end of Season 1 is when we introduce Eclipso — that’s very important,” Johns hinted, joking that fan favorite Hooty — Dr. Mid-Nite’s pet owl and loyal sidekick — is also likely to spread its wings. “We will definitely be talking about Hooty at some point,” he joked.

Moderated by sci-fi royalty Lea Thompson, who directed Season 1’s “Shiv Part One” episode, the panel — which included Brec Bassinger (Stargirl), Amy Smart (Barbara Whitmore), Yvette Monreal (Yolanda Montez), Anjelika Washington (Dr. Mid-Nite II), and Cameron Gellman (Rick Tyler, aka Hourman) — easily showed off a real affection for the show’s DC comic book roots. A joking question about whether the old or new JSA would prevail in a fight turned fan-serious in just the same way you’d expect of comics-loving kids, with Johns deciding at last that there’s just no easy answer — because it all boils down to which heroes are on the team.

With Stargirl already orbiting its second season as a full-scale series at The CW, all that’s left is to wait for word on when to expect the next batch of episodes. In the meantime, catch up all the way to last month's Season 1 cliffhanger via The CW’s streaming platforms.
