Star Trek: Discovery cast teases Season 3 and reads the S2 finale at Comic-Con@Home

Where, oh where, has the U.S.S. Discovery gone? We're no closer to finding out, but we did get to see Sonequa Martin-Green and the cast and crew of Star Trek: Discovery do a special reading of some of Season 2's sprawling finale. And, yes, we got a little tease about what to expect when the series returns for Season 3.

Kicking off the big Star Trek Universe panel that took place at Comic-Con@Home, Sonequa Martin-Green began by announcing that the panel was benefiting the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which fights for racial justice. As she says, "We stand by the truth that black lives matter." 

With special effects and storyboards playing along, the reading began. Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham) was joined by Doug Jones (Saru), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Hugh Culber), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Michelle Yeoh (Georgiou), Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), Emily Coutts (Detmer), Oyin Oladejo (Owosekun), Patrick Kwok-Choon (Rhys), Ronnie Rowe (Bryce), and Sara Mitich (Nilsson). Also present were Mary Chieffo (Klingon Chancellor L'Rell), and Alan Van Sprang (Leland). The stars of the new spin-off, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Anson Mount (Pike), Ethan Peck (Spock), and Rebecca Romijn (Number One) were also present.

Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise and executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi assisted with stage directions as well as playing multiple other parts, including Ash Tyler, as actor Shazad Latif was unavailable. The reading was a fantastic reminder of how great the finale of Season 2 was, and how fierce the battle with Section 31 was. It also gave a great look at the animatics that were the basis for all of the special effects.

The cast then answered questions sent in from fans, and Yeoh made it clear that the characters (and the cast) will continue to strive for what they believe in, and they'll "have to do it together." Wiseman added that she likes the fact that Discovery dispenses with the future utopia where everything is great all the time. The work is not done, and as she says, "...we allow that there's more to do within ourselves...I think that's a really important message to hear right now." Sonequa Martin-Green added that this was involved "confronting ourselves truthfully." 

She also teased Season 3 a little, saying what her hopes for it might include. "Salvation of sorts..." she says, adding, "...we the crew, in the finale, we decide to sacrifice everything for the future. There's the obvious hope that it works. There's also a hope of continuing to discover myself, as Burnham, that will always be there. The hope of continual unveiling, finding that perfect, sweet, sweet balance..." 

Wiseman added that though Tilly's journey to the captain's chair has obviously taken a weird turn, we are "going to see more" about that journey in Season 3. Yeoh spoke of her character's journey changing yet again, and she remarked that Georgiou doesn't want power, she just has it. Rapp promised that Season 3, now featuring a reunited Stamets and Culber, will continue to explore the personal, family-like dynamic of the crew. 

One lingering question concerning Season 3 of this series is when exactly will it be released? We still don't know, but we'll keep looking to that point of light, waiting for its return. The full read-through reunion, however, will be available for everyone to watch on July 24.
