Splinter Cell animated series infiltrating Netflix from John Wick writer
Tom Clancy, eat your spy-goggled heart out. Ubisoft's stealthy video game series Splinter Cell is getting an animated adaptation for Netflix courtesy of John Wick franchise writer Derek Kolstad.
Variety reports that the adult-aimed series is headed to Netflix, with Kolstad bringing his gunslinging expertise as writer and executive producer...and not just for a first season. Apparently, Netflix has already ordered two seasons and 16 episodes of the series — which looks to adapt a gaming franchise that's tackled such Mission: Impossible subject matter as top secret government agencies and advanced bioweapons.
The seven-game series (the latest, Blacklist, came out in 2013) became a defining franchise for Ubisoft alongside the Assassin's Creed games, which have already seen their fair share of multimedia adaptations. While Variety mentions that Tom Hardy has been attached to star as franchise lead Sam Fisher in a Splinter Cell movie since 2012, they note that the film hasn't made any headway in a long time. Whether Fisher will be a part of the animated series is unclear.
The series does not yet have a release date, though Kolstad's work can next be seen on the Disney+ Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
