Chris Rock tracks a Jigsaw copycat in second chilling trailer for 'Spiral: From the Book of Saw'

The game has changed in the second trailer for Spiral. A reboot of the lucrative Saw franchise, the upcoming horror flick was based on a story by none other than comedian Chris Rock. Lionsgate initially planned to release the film in May of 2020, but was ultimately forced to delay its release to 2021 over COVID-19 concerns.

Rock also stars in the movie as Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks, a New York City cop trying to track down a new Jigsaw killer who is setting their sights on officers of the law. John Kramer is most certainly dead, but the trailer assures us that his macabre legacy looms large with a quick snapshot of Tobin Bell. Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed Saws II - IV, returns to direct from a script by Jigsaw scribes Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. Samuel L. Jackson, Marisol Nichols, Max Minghella, Dan Petronijevic, Nazneen Contractor, and K.C. Collins fill out the cast. 

"Chris came in with a thriller concept. He pitched this very elaborate, dense idea," Lynn Bousman said earlier this year. We wanted it to feel much more like [David Fincher's] Se7en, but it has so many ties to the mythos of Saw ... Gore and violence was the gimmick [for the earlier movies], I think. Gore and violence is no longer a gimmick — it just serves the story. This is much more about character, tension, and fear."

"This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea, and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision, and passion for this classic horror franchise."

"I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2003," Rock said. "I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place."

"No one is ready for the insanity about to bleed out on screen!" Bousman wrote on Twitter just before production kicked off in summer 2019.

Saw: From the Book of Spiral hits theaters Friday, May 14 — about a year after its intended release date.
