Sony Pictures TV catches live-action 'Silk' show in its growing Spider-Verse web
Marvel's Cindy Moon, aka Silk, is swinging onto the small screen by way of Sony Pictures Television.
Variety confirmed this afternoon that the studio is working on a live-action series based on the Spider-Verse character created by writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos. Lauren Moon (Good Trouble, Atypical) is currently in negotiations to write the project. She might just be a perfect hire too, because like Silk, she's also Korean-American. Plus, you know, they share the same surname!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse writer/producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are attached as executive producers, alongside former Sony executive and Spidey veteran Amy Pascal.
According to Deadline's unnamed sources, Sony is in early talks with Amazon to be the SVOD distributor of Sony's "suite" of Marvel TV shows, starting with Silk. Sony Pictures Television declined to comment.
Cindy Moon made her comic book debut in 2014 as Peter Parker's fellow classmate, who received a bite from the same radioactive spider that inadvertently gave the world Spider-Man. She was gifted with superpowers as well, but unlike Peter, she received formal training on how to use them from a wealthy businessman named Ezekiel Sims. He ended up locking Cindy in a bunker for years to protect her from a vampiric group of villains known as the Inheritors.
Peter eventually learned of Cindy's existence, freed her, and the two became romantically involved, bonding over their shared abilities. After years of imprisonment, Moon became the vigilante known as Silk, ultimately defeating the Inheritors alongside other Spider-People from across the multiverse. A Cindy Moon TV show shouldn't really surprise anyone who's been paying attention since December 2018, when Pascal revealed that Silk and Jessica Drew (aka Spider-Woman) would both be utilized by Sony. "There’s a world in which everything comes together,” she said. "But that’s not something we can talk about yet."
At the time, though, she was specifically talking about an all-female Spider-Verse spinoff film. With Cindy Moon now set to make her live-action debut on television screens, it's unclear when the character will appear in the animated side of things, although it's not hard to theorize that two versions of her can exist in two separate media. It's all too early to tell, and trying to decode all of the information out there is like trying to escape from ... well, a spider's web.
In terms of future projects, Sony has 10 years of arachnid-related content already mapped out. Sequels to Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom, and Into Spider-Verse are all on the way, as are standalone features for Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and (possibly) Madame Web. And a few weeks ago, Olivia Wilde was tapped by the studio to direct a secret Marvel movie that many have suspected is centered around Spider-Woman.
