Enter the Grishaverse with full trailer for Netflix's much-anticipated Shadow and Bone
Fantasy fans have been treated right by Netflix over the past few months and things aren't looking to let up anytime soon. That's because Shadow and Bone, the new Leigh Bardugo-inspired series from showrunner Eric Heisserer (Arrival), has brought its first official trailer out from beyond the wall of darkness, and opened up a whole new world.
Take a look:
Based on Bardugo's beloved Grishaverse novel inspired in part by Russian culture and history, Shadow and Bone begins in a world beset by encroaching darkness, but the Kingdom of Ravka finds new hope when an orphan named Alina (Jessie Mei Li) displays what seems to be a once-in-a-generation power to summon the light. With her abilities revealed, Alina is drawn into a lush world of intrigue, where she finds that all her magic might not be enough to keep her alive.
The show's first season will boast eight hour-long episodes as they adapt Bardugo's two novels Shadow and Bone and Six of Crow with an expansive cast led by Ben Barnes (Westworld) who's playing General Kirigan, aka the Darkling. Crime and magic meet military combat in the world of the Shadow Fold, with shapeshifters, heartrenders, and other oddities populating this high fantasy landscape.
In a post-Game of Thrones world, Netflix has clearly set their sights on bringing ambitious new fantasy worlds to life, and this trailer, hot on the heels of last month's official teaser, definitely makes it feel like they've delivered with Shadow and Bone. Longtime Bardugo readers and newcomers alike are ready for this series.
Shadow and Bone hits Netflix on April 23.
