Project Blue Book SDCC panel teases Roswell and Area 51 in Season 2

SYFY WIRE doesn't just moderate Project Blue Book's official podcast, but we're ready for every piece of news coming from History's UFO-centric drama. The show — which stars Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) as Dr. J. Allen Hynek, the real-life guy in charge of the Air Force's alien investigations in the '50s and '60s — is coming back for Season 2, and we're here to learn everything about it.

At the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel today, SYFY WIRE heard stars Gillen, Michael Malarkey, Neal McDonough, and Laura Mennell talk about the upcoming season, alongside creator David O'Leary and showrunner Sean Jablonski. But talking is one thing, showing is another. The panel showed off a teaser for season two, during which Hynek and Quinn go full-blown Roswell conspiracy theorists — and yes, Area 51's modern viral verve will be recaptured in this UFO show.

The clip showed a 1947 press conference from the famous New Mexico town, where a rancher speaks about UFOs... and is quickly debunked by the military. And who else would be involved but McDonough's Harding? Since Roswell took place before the actual Project Blue Book, they had to cheat the controversy into the show, but it works just fine while managing to give one of its characters some added depth.

The second season picks up six months after Season 1 ends, finding its characters in search of the very origins of the extraterrestrial cover-up — deep, deep in secretive government territory — and dealing with the Antarctic discovery right off the bat. Even Mimi gets involved with the UFO hunt this time around (which Mennell teases will involve some big reveals). Will the truth ever come out? We believe.

Project Blue Book returns to History with the first of its 10 new episodes this winter.
