'No Time to Die' final trailer plays like a greatest hits of Daniel Craig's tenure as 007

No Time to Die — Daniel Craig's final onscreen outing as James Bond — just dropped its final trailer. The opening moments feel like a "Greatest Hits" playlist as the trailer reminds us of 007's previous missions and losses in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. All of them have been leading our hero to the events of this fifth movie.

Helmed and co-written by Maniac's Cary Joji Fukunaga (the first American filmmaker to direct an Eon-produced Bond feature), No Time to Die will wrap up Craig's spy-fi tenure in a neat bow. Sometime after the events of Spectre, James breaks up with Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) after learning a terrible secret about her and retires from active duty for a quiet life in Jamaica.

MI6's golden boy is brought back into the fray of global espionage when CIA agent Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) tracks 007 down and asks for his help in tracking a kidnapped scientist (David Dencik). James reluctantly agrees and ultimately comes face-to-face with Safin (Rami Malek), a scarred and insane villain hellbent on global genocide and immortality. He's more cunning and dangerous than Le Chiffre, Dominic Greene, Raoul Silva, and Ernst Stavro Blofeld all put together. Speaking of, Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) is also back, with the iconic baddie serving a Hannibal Lecter-esque role from prison.

"We had lots of loose threads that we hadn't tied up and the story, it just didn't feel complete," Craig said in October 2020. "I needed a break, I'll freely admit it. I just needed to get my head away from it for awhile and once I had and we started talking about storylines and things that we could do and where we could take it, I was like, 'I'm in. Let's do one more and try and finish the story' ... This was the chance to round it off."

Ralph Fiennes (M), Lashana Lynch (Nomi, a history making 00-agent who takes over Bond's position when he retires), Naomie Harris (Eve Moneypenny), Ben Whishaw (Q), Ana de Armas (Paloma), Rory Kinnear (Bill Tanner), and Billy Magnussen (Logan Ash) co-star.

No Time to Die was one of the very first 2020 blockbusters to postpone its release amid growing concerns relating to the coronavirus, which ended up throwing the world into a prolonged pandemic. The film was pushed to late November, with the hope being that things would be back to normal (i.e. theaters back open and running at full capacity). When it became clear that key markets (like New York City) would not be open in time, MGM and Eon decided to push the release date to spring 2021. This caused a domino effect that resulted in delays for other studio tentpoles like Universal's F9 and Warner Bros.' Dune. Of course, theaters were not back to normal last fall and No Time to Die was ultimately pushed to this October.

"Here's the deal: this thing is just bigger than all of us and we just want people to go and see this movie in the right way and safe way," Craig explained. "Cinemas all around the world are closed at the moment and we want to release the movie at the same time, all around the world, and this isn't the right time."

No Time to Die arrives in theaters everywhere Friday, Oct. 8 — close to two years after its intended release date.
