The Nevers are powering up in first trailer for HBO’s Victorian-era superhero series

The Nevers

Better late than Nevers! HBO's long-gestating sci-fi/fantasy series The Nevers is finally making some progress to the screen for HBO. It's been in the works for years, weathering some turbulent changes amid the departure of creator Joss Whedon, but now fans looking to see what the show has in store can check out its first full trailer, which dropped today.

The series centers on "The Touched," who are basically a group of superpowered Victorian-era women, and their quest to save the world ... after they finally learn to work together. Led by Outlander's Laura Donnelly, who plays boozing superhero Amalia True, the cast is stacked with talent including Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Ben Chaplin, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Nick Frost, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Denis O’Hare. How does this epic cast and ambitious tale start? Just watch the official trailer to get a taste.

Check it out:

The Touched have their own hideout (The Orphanage) led by their own Professor X-esque benefactor. Cops, royalty, slumlords, doctors, and other colorful characters of the era populate the proceedings — with plenty of bad behavior for these superwomen to shut down.

Needless to say, there's a lot going on in this series — which makes sense as HBO saw this show as a potential Game of Thrones replacement, just as its other hit fantasy series was leaving the air.

Though the premise was initially conceived by Whedon, the embattled Justice League director has since exited the project, with Philippa Goslett (How to Talk to Girls at Parties) taking over as showrunner to oversee production for the second half of the first season.

The Nevers hits HBO on April 11.
