WIRE Buzz: Mission: Impossible 7 starts production; Supernatural's Jensen Ackles claims classic car; more

After some behind-the-scenes drama involving a bridge, the Polish government, and one disgruntled industry member, the production of the next step in Ethan Hunt’s death-defying on-screen journey has begun. Leaving the drama behind for some spectacular views and even more spectacular stuntwork, Mission: Impossible 7 filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie posted a picture on social media celebrating the first day shooting Tom Cruise’s latest spy adventure.

The pic itself shows off a beautiful vista and one massive, massive ramp. What’s that ramp for on a Mission: Impossible film? Obviously for Tom Cruise to launch himself off in the most dangerous way possible, of course.

Just an ordinary first day on set, riding a motorcycle at high speeds into the vast nothingness. At least when Tom Cruise did it (in this video seen in a Daily Mail report), he was wearing a wired harness. This might not even be the boundary-pushing stunt of the film, as Cruise has previously climbed the world's tallest building and clung to the outside of a moving plane.

Next, fifteen seasons is a long time to pine after a prop. But that’s what one of the stars of The CW’s long-running Supernatural has done as the epic series has traversed seemingly every kind of otherworldly occurrence and foe. Now, Jensen Ackles AKA Dean Winchester is getting to take home the most important thing on the Supernatural set...aside from his co-star Jared Padalecki, that is.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Ackles explained that he would be participating in the time-honored tradition of snagging some set swag after the series wraps this fall. The final season had been partially postponed from earlier this year, but as the end-times episodes approach, the actor has at least one thing to look forward to: the Impala.

"As far as taking something on the final day, I will definitely be taking something that I've had my eye on since day one of Supernatural. But it's okay, I'm not stealing it. I got permission,” Ackles said. "I begged and begged and pleaded for years, but I finally got it this year. They're going to let me drive home the Impala."

His baby, the ‘67 Chevy Impala, is the Winchester’s family vehicle—a muscle car passed down from their dad and their constant home on the road. It’s quite a parting gift for the actor, but what about his on-screen brother?

"I have a few trinkets here and there. But I'll never admit to it," Padalecki said. "I have tons of s***! I have a few trinkets that will stay with me forever that won't be missed by the production. I was going to steal the Men of Letter's bunker, but it wouldn't fit in my car sadly. But I have a few trinkets here and there that I hope to hold dear forever and ever."

The bunker is almost as big an ask as the Impala...and way harder to transport. Should’ve put the thing on wheels. But as things head towards their conclusion, the actors are mostly focused on the closure coming their way.

"With both of these last two scripts, I got highly emotional just reading them," Ackles said. "I'm going to have to dig deep when we film the end. I'm going to have to do what Dean does and push all that emotion down."

Supernatural marches towards the end of its final season starting on Oct. 8 and finishes with the series finale on Nov. 19.

Finally, another show has joined the ranks of productions that have slowly started again, as A Discovery of Witches announces that it's wrapped it's first day of filming Season 3. 

The news was tweeted out by Sky TV, the British network that airs the series in the UK and its co-producer along with AMC, along with an accompanying photo of the production's clapper on set — though the surroundings offer no clue as to its location. The tweet reads: "All of the daemons, vampires and witches together again. First day of A Discovery of Witches Season 3 complete!" 

Based on the best-selling All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness, A Discovery of Witches tells the story of Diana, a young witch, and Matthew Clairmount, the vampire she loves, as they try and figure out both how to control her powers and how to keep both their species and a third (daemons) from dying out, as each new generation's abilities have started to wane. 

According to Sky Studios CEO Gary Davey earlier this year, the show will be one of the few productions that will be trying to script potential ways to end the season within the early episodes should production need to be shut down due to a second wave of COVID. This should allow the show to feel like it reached a natural narrative end, rather than the abrupt finales that have plagued various other shows through this last TV season. 

Lucky for fans, Season 2 of the series has already wrapped filming all ten of its episodes, with A Discovery of Witches now set to premiere in the UK in January of next year. The stateside start date of the show has yet to be announced on AMC.
