Steve Carell's Gru rises to power in first gibberish-y teaser for Minions 2
Just how did Steve Carell's Gru become one of the world's most prominent supervillains? We'll get the answer to that question in early July when the second Minions film, subtitled The Rise of Gru, waddles into theaters.
One question the new Super Bowl commercial for The Rise of Gru answers in no uncertain terms is that the Minions' slapstick antics are intact and sillier than ever. Teased by Illumination as "the untold story of one 12-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain," Gru had better be alert and on point with this much insanity flying around in the 30-second "Get Ready" Super Bowl spot:
Despite a tepid critical response, Despicable Me, the first Minions movie, racked up over $1 billion at the global box office in 2015. It is currently the fourth-highest-grossing animated movie of all time, after The Lion King 2019, Frozen, and Incredibles 2.
The short Super Bowl tease is just an appetizer for the movie's upcoming full trailer, which Illumination and Universal Pictures plan to unveil later this week, on Feb. 5. From there, it's just a bite-sized wait until the film's summertime release. Directed by Kyle Balda, the banana-related fun begins anew when Minions: The Rise of Gru opens in theaters on July 3, 2020.
