First trailer for Locke & Key on Netflix opens a door of magic and demons

If you thought the youth-draining Charlie Manx was a scary Joe Hill horror villain, you ain't seen nothing yet, folks. The first trailer for Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill's Netflix adaptation of Locke & Key is here, and doesn't shy away from the scarier elements of the comic Hill made with artist Gabriel Rodriguez over at IDW.

Mourning the murder of their patriarch, the Locke family returns to their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which contains a bunch of magical keys. As the family test the powers of the the keys, the family must contend with an ancient demon that will stop at nothing to get its hands on the supernatural door-openers.

Epic. Whispers in the wings, responses coming from wells...things are creepy in this startlingly accurate house. Ghosts and doubles populate the trailer, as evil pursues the keys. It might not be Hill House, but it's definitely Joe Hill House.

It's also definitely skewing younger than some fans had imagined. With a youthful cast — Darby Stanchfield, Jackson Robert Scott, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Bill Heck, Laysla De Oliveira, Sherri Saum, Thomas Mitchell Barnet, Griffin Gluck, and Coby Bird — and an effects-filled world of magic and mystery to solve, it looks like Locke & Key will be aiming for the older end of the YA crowd.

And that's just fine, even if it's a little new for Hill. The writer's genre bonafides extend far beyond his pedigree (he's the son of Stephen King), with an ever-expanding multimedia empire all his own (NOS4A2 and Creepshow) — and now the faithful-looking adaptation of the Eisner-nominated Locke & Key is here to grab the comic and streaming crowds.

Season 1 of Locke & Key hits Netflix on Feb. 7.
