Legacies: Cast and crew tease Season 2 of the Vampire Diaries spinoff at SDCC

No one wants to go back to school after summer break, but we'll be more than happy to step back into the halls of learning at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted in Season 2 of Legacies on The CW. Before the next installment of the Vampire Diaries spinoff arrives this fall (filming was confirmed to begin this Monday), fans got a few teasers from the cast and crew at SDCC.

At the very end of the Season 1 finale, Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell) defeated Malivore by jumping into The Pit, but at the cost of erasing herself from everyone's memories.

“When we come back, she’s in Malivore and no one remembers who she is or that she existed … Her goal is to get out," said executive producer, Julie Plec. “It’s kind of a familiar inky black space she’s experienced before. It’s not a fun place to spend her summer break ... He is a man made of mud. That being said, his whole quest is to inhabit a body. Landon is his first choice … Malivore remains this towering man of mud until he finds [a new body].”

"It’s not great in there," chimed in executive producer, Brett Matthews, remarking on how dank and smelly it is inside Malivore.

With Hope gone, Landon Kirby (Aria Shaghashemi) is sort of lost in life, his predicament made all the more heartbreaking by the fact that he can't even remember what's missing.

“He’s sort of floating in the wind," admitted Shaghashemi.

Salvatore headmaster Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis), on the other hand, is on the case find out who among his students is missing. Unlike Landon, he's very much aware of the void left by Hope's sacrifice.

“There is evidence left from the season finale that suggests that there is one more person missing," Davis stated. "He’s scratching his [head], trying to figure out who it is."

As for the monsters you can expect to see in Season 2, Matthews hinted at the return of the merman, who will most likely come back for revenge on our heroes. The EP also voiced his support for an anti-Santa Claus/Krampus-esque antagonist for a holiday-themed Christmas episode. Flec built on his "Monster of the Week" comments with the concept of exploring the dark side of love.

“We have had a few laughs in the writer’s room about evil cupid," she said. "Cupid’s a**hole brother who feeds on lovers to sustain himself."

Cast member Jenny Boyd (Lizzie Saltzman) confessed that she wanted to see gremlins on the show, which prompted Plec to confirm that Joe Dante's '80s classic about the technology-tampering creatures will be playing on a television in the very first episode of the new season.

Season 2 of Legacies premieres on The CW Thursday, Oct. 10 at 9/8c. Season 1 can currently be streamed on Netflix.
