Jurassic World: Dominion chomps on first set photos as filming resumes amid the pandemic
What does a blockbuster movie set look like in the age of COVID-19? Thanks to three new images from the restarted shoot of Jurassic World: Dominion in the United Kingdom, we now have a good idea. Aside from man-eating dinosaurs, the crew now has to be on the lookout for a deadly pathogen, which can only be kept in check by constant temperature checks, at least three coronavirus tests a week, mandatory face masks, special entry checkpoints that allow for hand sanitization, and more.
In the image below, you can see the specially sectioned doors for crew members of the "Green Zone" (i.e. director, cast, camera operators, and other essential workers) and "Yellow Zone" (i.e. misc. personnel). Each side has hand soap/sanitizer and boxes of what appear to be gloves or masks. Given that masks have been shown to slow the spread of droplets in the air, we'd wager it's the latter.
Okay, now for a fun image of what we're all here for: the dinos! Below, we see a masked member of the production prepping a cage full of what looks like Compys, the nasty little buggers that attacked the little girl at the start of 1997's The Lost World. Later on, a pack of them kill Roland Tembo's right-hand man, Dieter Stark (Peter Stormare). Why are these Compsognathuses in a box? Well, since dinosaurs were unleashed into the world at the end of last movie, we'll go ahead and guess that someone is trying to round them all up before they replace humans as the planet's dominant species.
And here we have our very first still of actors in action (plus the boom mic operator, who is, of course, wearing a mask). In this photograph, we see Chris Pratt's Owen Grady stepping into a heavily wooded area with a hunting knife affixed to his belt, but who's that leading the way? It doesn't look like Bryce Dallas Howard's Claire Dearing at first glance, so who is it? Is this someone from a previous film or a wholly new character we have yet to meet? Moreover, has Owen found someone who can match his legendary swashbuckling survival skills?
Colin Trevorrow returns as director after J.A. Bayona helmed Fallen Kingdom. Trevorrow, who executive-produces alongside Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall, co-wrote the screenplay with Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim: Uprising). The project is bringing back all the living characters from the last two installments, as well as the scientific trio — Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) — from the first Jurassic Park.
Newcomers to the franchise include: DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie, Scott Haze, Dichen Lachman, and Campbell Scott (although he'll be taking on the role of an established character, Lewis Dogdson).
With production back on track, it is very possible that Jurassic World: Dominion can still make its intended theatrical release date of June 11, 2021.
