'Hogwarts Legacy' returns to Harry Potter’s alma mater in reveal trailer for new PS5 game

The world of Harry Potter will continue the magic in the new PlayStation era with Hogwarts Legacy, a just-announced open world game that aims to wave its magic wand over the wizarding world.

Revealed with an action-packed trailer during Sony’s blowout PlayStation 5 event today, Hogwarts Legacy promises an all-new story that’ll unfold right in the hallowed halls of Harry Potter’s old alma mater — yep, we’re talking about Hogwarts itself.

Check out the reveal trailer, which isn't short on action — or magic: 

“Experience a new story set at #Hogwarts in the 1800s,” publisher WB Games teases. “Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart. Make allies, battle Dark wizards and decide the fate of the wizarding world.”

Actually, there’s a little more to it than that. Though the game’s time setting will likely prevent Harry Potter himself from making an appearance, Legacy will arrive as an open-world action RPG, one that puts players in control of their own story-based adventure. If you’ve seen it done in the movies or watched it leap off the pages of J.K. Rowling’s iconic books, you can probably do it here: “Embark on a journey through familiar and new locations as you explore and discover fantastic beasts, customize your character and craft potions, master spell casting, upgrade talents, and become the wizard you want to be,” teases the game's freshly launched website. 

While the game was revealed during Sony’s killer event, it won’t just be limited to the PS5. Developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games, Hogwarts Legacy is set to hit the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC sometime in 2021.
