Game of Thrones creators wish there were no trailers, but a real one for Season 8 is still coming

We're only three months away from the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones and to date, HBO has released only three very short teaser trailers.

During a chat with Entertainment Weekly, creators/showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, revealed that while they aren't the biggest fans of trailers in general, a full-fledged look at the final season will debut prior to the spring.

“[David Lynch] was saying he wished there were no trailers,” Benioff said. “And it’s true, you could just go into a movie and see something completely fresh.”

“I wish there were no trailers,” Weiss added. “I just want somebody to say, ‘Trust me, go see this.' We won’t though because then we went and saw Ready Player One with our kids and they played the Westworld trailer and it looked great. And we’re like, ‘Ah, we should do that.'”

The misgivings of Benioff and Weiss are not unfounded. Most trailers these days give away entire plot points and twists, so that you feel like you've just watched the entire thing without even buying a ticket. That's why some folks have opted to avoid all trailers and promotional materials, allowing for a fresh take on a film or television series without any "baggage."

With only six episodes in Game of Thrones' swansong, the main trailer's challenge will be to effectively get fans hyped, while also holding back on crucial story information. We don't know much right now, except from all the loose ends left hanging by the Season 7 finale, which finally had the White Walkers breaching the ancient Wall meant to keep them out of the world of men.

Season 8 of Game of Thrones will premiere on HBO Sunday, April 14. The last four episodes were written by Benioff and Weiss, who also directed the series finale.
