Fan theory suggests a character was edited out of the latest Avengers: Endgame teaser

With fans hungry for any bit of information they can glean about Avengers: Endgame, a new theory regarding the film's latest teaser has begun circulating on social media.

A chilling new 30-second spot for the movie premiered right at the start of Super Bowl LIII on Sunday (Feb. 3), and like the teaser trailer released back in December, this fresh clip provides little in the way of concrete plot details. But that has not stopped fans on Reddit and Twitter (here and here) from speculating on one thing they have found curious: the space between some of the characters in two shots from the spot.

In the first shot, as you can see above, there is a wider space between Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Jim Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle) that — to a number of fans anyway — seems to indicate that another, unidentified character has been digitally removed from the image.

Same thing in the second pic: With the surviving members of the Avengers (and one furry Guardian) all marching single file through Avengers HQ, it appears that there is a gap in the line between Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Rhodes where someone has been erased as well.

So what gives? While one could chalk this up to the overactive imaginations of fans thirsting for even the smallest nugget of info on a film shrouded in mystery, there is precedent: Marvel altered the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War to make it look as if the Hulk was running into battle alongside his fellow Avengers and the Wakandans, while in the finished film it was actually Banner inside the Hulkbuster armor while he struggled with Hulk's refusal to join the fray.

It was a blatant bait and switch that Marvel deployed to mask one of the film's plot points, but it worked, so there's no reason to think the studio wouldn't do it again — perhaps this time to hide the identity of a character it doesn't want revealed yet. The betting money on the social threads says it's Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), which makes sense, seeing how her movie comes out first and Marvel may want to hold off on publicizing her involvement in Avengers: Endgame.

Take a look and let us know what you think. Unusual coincidence, or is Marvel playing digital hide and seek again? We'll find out for sure when Avengers: Endgame arrives on April 26 ... a date that can't come soon enough.
