DC unveils 4 new animated films for 2021, including 2-part Batman: The Long Halloween
It's an annual tradition for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to announce its upcoming slate of DC animated movies at San Diego Comic-Con. However, since WB and DC decided to hold their own nerdy gathering this summer, the announcement was made during a FanDome panel for Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Moderator Matt Bomer (Larry Trainor/Negative Man in Doom Patrol) was the one to let fans in on the secret of four fresh animated releases coming in 2021.
The first project of next year will be Batman: Soul of the Dragon, a wholly original production.
Executive produced by Bruce Timm (co-creator of Batman: The Animated Series) and Sam Liu, (Reign of the Supermen), Dragon takes place in the 1970s and sees Batman facing off against a foe from his past with the help of three martial artists: Richard Dragon, Ben Turner, and Lady Shiva. David Giuntoli ("Batman"), Mark Dacascos ("Richard Dragon"), Kelly Hu ("Lady Shiva"), Michael Jai White ("Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger"), James Hong ("O-Sensei"), and Josh Keaton ("Jeffrey Burr") lend their voices to the movie. Jeremy Adams (Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge) wrote the screenplay.
Next up, we have Justice Society World War II, another original flick that is slated for next spring. "I'm not allowed to give details, but you might just hear a familiar voice in that film," Bomer teased. "I don't know who it is..."
In the summer and fall of 2021, the studio will roll out a two-part adaptation of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's Batman: The Long Halloween. Told across 13 issues between 1996 and 1997, this famous story arc is set during the Caped Crusader's early crime-fighting career as he rushes to track down Holiday, a killer whose homicidal crimes are based on different holidays.
"Expect more details as we get closer to those releases," Bomer concluded.
Man of Tomorrow is now available to purchase and/or rent on digital platforms. It arrives on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Tuesday, Sep. 8. Check out an exclusive clip from the film here.
