Captain Marvel: Brie Larson soars higher than ever in Super Bowl spot

Brie Larson's Captain Marvel crashed the Super Bowl in a brand-new trailer for the MCU's first female-centric superhero movie.

Helmed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (the directing duo behind It's Kind of a Funny Story and Mississippi Grind), the 1990s-set film will be less of an origin story than what we've seen from most Marvel solo projects that introduce us to a character for the first time.

Despite taking place before 2008's Iron Man, Captain Marvel will feature a number of familiar faces, like a two-eyed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).

The latest teaser underscores that this is Marvel Studios' first female-centric film, especially when Carol's fellow Air Force pilot, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), says: "Let's show these boys how we do it." Danvers responds with the words that have become the movie's tagline: "Higher, further, faster, baby." There's also that shot of Carol standing up among all the uniformed male officers at the 10-second mark to really drive home that Disney is breaking the mold in the MCU after all these years.

Saved by the Kree many years ago, Carol Danvers cannot remember her life as a human on Earth. Even so, she's gonna have to team up with Fury to save the planet from a shapeshifting Skrull invasion led by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). Warning: Old ladies will get punched in the face. More importantly, we'll learn how Nick knew to page Carol at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Lashana Lynch, and Jude Law all co-star. In particular, Law is almost certainly playing Mar-Vell, leader of the Kree's most elite fighters, the Starforce.

Since Captain Marvel opens in theaters on March 8, this could very well be the final trailer released for the film.
