Bill & Ted drops full righteous trailer, sets VOD release for long-awaited sequel 'Face the Music'
Quickly, into the phone booth, everyone! Ted Logan and Bill Preston are off on another time-traveling romp in the full trailer for Bill & Ted Face the Music. Even better (at least for fans)? The studio is planning a dual theatrical and VOD release now, so we'll all be able to jam out from the safety of our homes when the new September release date rolls around.
Helmed by Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest, Red 2), the long-awaited threequel finds our titular heroes (Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are both back and ready to rock n' roll) trying to save the universe, while simultaneously grappling with the crisis of middle age.
Having reached the pinnacle of their rock careers at the end of 1991's Bogus Journey, Bill and Ted are pretty much washed up in 2020. Some people (like Ted's father, played by the returning Hal Landon Jr.) don't even believe that their most excellent adventures took place, chalking their stories up to mere delusion. When a council of futuristic elders tasks them with writing a song that will unite all life, however, the duo jumps at the chance to be legendary rock stars again.
Facing some serious creative blockage, they decide cut corners and travel to the future in order to rob their older selves of the miraculous music. What they didn't anticipate is that their older selves are jacked-up felons (seen above).
Wanting to help their dads, Billie Logan (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea Preston (Samara Weaving) travel through time to put together a band of history's most talented musicians. In addition, William Sadler is back as Death, who doesn't seem to have lost his taste for competitive games.

“I would say, for production, we probably had the amount of money we’d get to make a television pilot,” Parisot said to Total Film. "And we had to make a movie that takes place in Hell, and has the destruction of space and time, and the future prosthetics. It was logistically very difficult to make. What made it easier to make was that almost everybody I had worked with over the years — well-known artists with a collection of awards under their belts — took incredible pay cuts, and did anything to accomplish this project."
Original Bill & Ted scribes, Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, penned the script. Posting on Twitter, Solomon shared a behind-the-scenes production photo.
"This is one of my favorite personal photos from the set of @BillandTed3," he wrote. "Each morning before @Winter & Keanu would head to hair & make up, we’d rehearse the scene with (director) Dean Parisot (that’s his hand bottom left of frame). Once it was set, we’d run it for the crew."
There's also a new poster that features all the principal characters:
Kristen Schaal, Holland Taylor, Erinn Hayes, Jayma Mays, Anthony Carrigan, Jillian Bell, Kid Cudi, Beck Bennett, and Amy Stoch are also a part of the cast.
Bill & Ted Face the Music arrives On Demand and in select theaters Tuesday, Sep. 1. It was originally supposed to be an exclusive theatrical release in late August, but that obviously had to change due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Fans can learn more about the movie during its Comic-Con@Home panel Saturday (July 25), which is set to feature appearances from Reeves, Winter, Parisot, Solomon, Matheson, Weaving, Lundy-Paine, and Sadler. In the meantime, check out two new production stills below:
