Aladdin: The internet has a lot of thoughts about Will Smith's blue Genie
Back in December, Disney released the first image of Will Smith as the Genie in Guy Ritchie's live-action remake of Aladdin. Almost immediately, there was a backlash that Smith wasn't blue like the character in the 1992 animated original.
As a result, Smith had to assure fans via social media that he'd be blue and CGI for a lot of the film, but would take on a normal human form when he's not alone with Mena Massoud's Aladdin, who releases him from the magic lamp.
Last night, viewers got their first look at Smith in all of his blue glory and almost immediately began to regret their wish (pun intended) for a more faithful visual representation of the desire-granting djinn first played by the late Robin Williams.
As you can imagine, the reactions on social media, mainly Twitter, were genuinely hilarious with many folks pointing out just how terrified they were of Smith's Genie and his striking resemblance to Tobias Fünke (David Cross) when the psychiatrist/failed actor from Arrested Development tried to join the Blue Man Group.
There was also some inspired Big Fat Liar and Courage the Cowardly Dog references in there somewhere because, honestly, why not?!

Aladdin opens in theaters everywhere Friday, May 24.
Co-written by Ritchie and John August, the film co-stars Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Navid Negahban (The Sultan), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), and Billy Magnussen (Prince Anders).
