SYFY WIRE Eisner Awards

Bitter Root, Mariko Tamaki, Stan Sakai and more take home 2020 Eisner Awards

By Matthew Jackson
Eisner Awards

The 2020 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, celebrating the greatest achievements of the last year in comics storytelling, were presented Friday night via a virtual ceremony hosted by Comic-Con International. It was far from a typical year for the Eisners, which are usually celebrated with a banquet on San Diego Comic-Con weekend. This year, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic meant not only that the ceremony itself couldn't proceed as normal, but that even the in-person judging couldn't take place in San Diego as it usually does. Everything from the judging process to the voting was different this year, and the voting process itself was clouded by issues with the online system used to submit the votes. Still, we eventually arrived at Eisners night, and some fantastic books and creators took home trophies in Comic-Con@Home a ceremony led by actor and comedian Phil LaMarr.

Among the big winners were Mariko Tamaki, who took home Best Writer honors for her work on ArchieHarley Quinn: Breaking Glass, and the graphic novel Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me, for which she also shared the Best Publication for Teens award with artist Rosemary Valero-O'Connell, who also took home the Best Penciller/Inker honor. Invisible Kingdom, the sci-fi series from writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Christian Ward, also had a big night, taking home Best New Series and Best Painter/Digital Artist for Ward. Best Continuing Series went to the acclaimed Image Comics fantasy title Bitter Root, while Best Limited Series went to Little Bird. Graphic novelist icon Raina Telgemeier also had a big night, taking home awards for Best Writer/Artist and Best Publication for Kids for Guts, as did the legendary Usagi Yojimbo creator Stan Sakai, who won Best Lettering and Best Archival/Collection Project for The Complete Grasscutter Artist Select.

Speaking of Sakai, he was also honored by the Eisners as one of the voters' choice inductees into this year's class of the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, alongside Louise Simonson, Alison Bechdel, Howard Cruse, Don and Maggie Thompson, and Bill Watterson. The judges' choice inductees this year were Nell Brinkley and E. Simms Campbell. This year's Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award winners including The Hero Initiative, creators4comics, and The Comic Book United Fund.

To watch the whole Eisners ceremony from 2020, including Sergio Aragones presiding over the Hall of Fame inductions and acceptance speeches, check out the video below.
