Veteran character actor Dick Miller, who starred in Gremlins and The Terminator, dies at 90

Veteran character actor and quintessential "that guy" Dick Miller has died today at the age of 90. The news was first reported by Variety.

The actor, with his distinctive brow and rough-around-the-edges persona, is perhaps best known as playing the surly neighbor Murray Futterman in Joe Dante's Christmas horror classic Gremlins. That same year, he popped up as an equally surly pawn shop owner in James Cameron's The Terminator.

Miller's screen career spanned more than 60 years. He got his start in the mid-'50s, often playing lead roles in films from prolific grindhouse filmmaker Roger Corman, including The Oklahoma Woman and Bucket of Blood. Though his career as a leading man never quite took off, he remained a prolific actor in his smaller roles.

Over the years, Miller appeared in horror/comedies like The 'Burbs and The Howling, as well as TV series like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Eerie, Indiana. He even lent his voice to Batman: The Animated Series as "Boxy" Bennett. He also voiced Chuckie Sol in the animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

While Miller's career slowed in recent years, he was still a regular in low-budget horror pics that helped define his career. His last credited appearance will be in the upcoming slasher movie Hannukah, where he'll portray the (presumably) surly Rabbi Walter Paisley.

Miller was a character actor in the truest sense of the word. A performer who was effortlessly distinguishable in his countless appearances in film and TV over the years. He's survived his wife Lainie, daughter Barbara, and granddaughter Autumn.
