Venom returns to the early days in new comics series from co-creator David Michelinie
Our favorite alien symbiote is going all the way back to the beginning.
Marvel movie fans are plenty familiar these days with the hilarious big-screen story of how Venom and Eddie Brock first joined forces. Now that Sony’s spawned a pair of recent Venom movies to get the slithery symbiote back on everyone’s mind, Marvel Comics is heading back to Venom's very beginnings with a new comic series, straight from the mind of one of the character's original creators.
Venom co-creator David Michelinie and artist Ivan Fiorelli will launch launch the limited comics series Venom: Lethal Protector early next year, going back to the start of the alien interloper’s first encounter with Earth. The new series is set to hit stores in March of 2022, and Marvel is sharing an early peek at Paulo Siqueira's cover — which seems to show that magically messy moment when Eddie and Venom first meet.
Check it out:
“Before Carnage and space gods, clones and toxins, and the revelation that he was a father, Eddie Brock was a down-on-his-luck reporter who had tried to take his own life and been saved by an extraterrestrial alien,” Marvel teased in its reveal. “In the spirit of hit titles like X-Men Legends and Maestro, explore an earlier era of Marvel Comics for an all-new, horrifying tale that not only revisits the wicked web-slinger’s past, but hints at what’s to come in his future!”
Alongside Todd MacFarlane, Michelinie first helped introduce Venom into the comics side of the Spider-verse back in the 1980s as part of the Amazing Spider-Man series. Venom: Lethal Protector puts Michelinie back in the driver’s seat once again to revisit Venom’s legacy in a five-issue limited series for present-day readers, featuring art from rising illustrator Fiorelli.
“Getting to do a multi-issue story with the original Venom was like sitting down to dinner with an old friend — who wants to eat your brain for dessert!” Michelinie said in Marvel’s announcement. “It was both fun and exciting, and I hope people enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.”
Get ready to go symbiotic once more when Venom: Lethal Protector #1 arrives on March 23 of next year. If you just can’t wait until next spring to find your next Venom fix, you’re in luck there, too: Fresh from its box office-shaking run in theaters, Venom: Let There Be Carnage lands on Blu-ray and DVD starting Dec. 14.
