'Uncharted' airlifts pirate ships and teases Sully's iconic mustache in second trailer
The long-awaited film adaptation of the Naughty Dog video game franchise hits theaters on Feb. 18, 2022.
Did you ever think pirate ships could fly outside of Neverland? Well, they can... at least in the second swashbuckling trailer for Sony's long-awaited film adaptation of the Uncharted video game franchise.
Airlifted galleons, bloodthirsty villains, billions of dollars in long-lost treasure, deadly booby traps, and the introduction (finally!) of Sully's iconic mustache are all featured in this latest batch of footage, which really underscores the old married couple dynamic between Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and Sully (Mark Wahlberg).
"The spirit of their banter is really evocative of the games and sets the groundwork for many further adventures of this really great pair," director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom) teased to Empire for the magazine's February 2022 issue. Fleischer was ultimately hired to oversee the long-awaited project after a number of filmmakers — like David O. Russell and Shawn Levy — came and went over the years.

Serving as an origin story for the Nathan Drake we all know and love from the games, Uncharted centers around a heated race to find a 500-year-old windfall that was said to be lost by the famed Portuguese explorer and sailor, Ferdinand Magellan.
Not only the treasure worth a crap ton of money — it may also hold a clue to the whereabouts of Nathan's long-lost brother. Our heroes (who are also joined by Sophia Ali's Chloe Frazer) just need to get there before Moncada does. Played by Antonio Banderas, the ruthless antagonist firmly believes that he deserves the fabled booty, given the fact that his family has been searching for it for centuries. Tati Gabrielle plays one of his hench-people.
“I got to meet Tom Holland; he’s a huge fan," Nolan North, who provides the voice of Nathan Drake in the games, said earlier this month at Emerald City Comic Con. "I met Ruben Fleischer, the director, as well. He’s a fan, and…I think they did a brilliant move by [approaching it] like, ‘Let’s find Nathan Drake in his 20s.’ Because none of the games ever address that.”
The voiceover artist — who is also expected to make some sort of cameo — added that Fleischer & co. "nailed" the tone of the beloved source material. “That little bit of humor in a film like that is so important."
Fleischer and Holland serve as executive producers alongside Robert J. Dohrmann, David Bernad, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Neil Druckmann, Evan Wells, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway. Marcum and Holloway (the duo known for helping write the first Iron Man movie) share screenplay credit with The Wheel of Time showrunner, Rafe Judkins.
Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad are producers.
Uncharted will exclusively premiere in theaters on Feb. 18, 2022.
