Funko Pop!s take over the week while nerdy lawn gnomes take over your yard

By Loryn Stone
important toy news copy

Welcome back to Important Toy News, the SYFY WIRE column that shows you all the best and coolest happenings in the world of amazing toys and collectibles for the week.

So go count your dollars and find those pennies in your couch cushions because we are diving back into the toy box for another delightful week in toy news. Come on an epic toy-hunting odyssey with me, your resident, and hopefully favorite, toy journalist. But at least this week, we don’t have to clear out space on those shelves, because Funko Pop!s are stackable, and we’re also getting nerdy in the great outdoors.

Gnerdy Gnomes TMNT Michelangelo

TEENAGE MUTANT GNOME-JA TURTLES

Pop culture and gardening, together at last! The folks at Surreal Entertainment are using their awesome licenses for good with a new set of fantastic garden gnomes. Called Gnerd Gnomes, they will make your home, yard, and garden a little geekier and a whole lot more fun. Each of these delights stands eight inches tall, is made of hard, durable PVC plastic, comes with a lawn stake, and costs $24.99. They will ship in March 2021. The flagship wave includes The Office's Dwight Schrute, SpongeBob and Patrick, Wolverine, Avatar Aang, and TMNT's Michelangelo. You can see all the ordering information today on BigBadToyStore.

Medicom Toy Batman and Robin

THE DARK KNIGHT RETOYS

Japanese toymaker Medicom Toy is dropping an especially amazing delight for Batman fans. Based on The Dark Knight Returns, The MAFEX Batman is a fully articulated figure standing 6.3 inches tall. Batman features a fabric cape and a high level of articulation for acting out all of your favorite scenes. Robin stands in scale with Batman and comes with a slingshot and cloak with wires for posing. We have quite a wait for this breathtaking piece, as it will not ship until September 2021. However, you can preorder it today for $149.99, and when it ships in a year, it will be like a super tasty treat from Summer Santa.

Hasbro Star Wars Saga Sith

REVENGE OF TOY SITHS

Disney and Hasbro dropped the news of (several) upcoming Star Wars (toy) box sets last week that made many fans elated, but also made many fans confused. Know those 3.75-inch scale vintage Star Wars-style action figures that come in the Power of the Force and Episode One boxes? The ones that are super fun to collect, but are worth nothing? Well now, Disney is packing five of those suckers into a box and charging $30 for them. Each box is themed and comes with a droid instead of a final character you truly want. It’s important to note that some of these characters are appearing for the first time in this scale, while some are just re-releases of previously existing molds.

For example, the Sith Pack (the only one I preordered) comes with Sidious, Kylo Ren, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, and a red 3PO-series droid. Yes, we know that Count Dooku or Anakin Skywalker (who appears in a different box) are far more Sith than a red droid, but this is the gimmick we are being fed. Other sets include Jedi Order, Galactic Republic, the aforementioned Sith set, Bounty Hunters (which is also very tempting), The Resistance, The Rebel Alliance, The New Order, and The Empire.

Funko Pop Rides Jollibee

CHICKENJOY THIS JOLLIBEE FUNKO

Let’s take a minute and discuss what’s happening in the whirling world of Funko Pop!s, shall we? Because it’s monstrously huge! Do you remember a few weeks back when we discussed the upcoming McDonalds Ad Mascots Pop! figures? Well, now we have a new fast food buddy on his way! It’s the Jollibee, and he’s serving up fast food Filipino style. Jollibee is a well known fast-food franchise in the Philippines, but we have some of their restaurants in the Los Angeles area too. While Mr. Bee has appeared in Pop! form before, this is his first time as a Pop! Ride. Order this Funko Pop! Rides today for $74.99 (oof). It will ship in September 2020.

Funko Pop WWE Macho Man

FUNKO MAN RANDY SAVAGE

Funko is taking it ring-side with these fabulous WWE-inspired Pop!s. Characters for this wave include Macho Man Randy Savage, Mr. T, and The Rock. The Rock and Macho Man each have previous Pop! releases, but these new ones blow them out of the water! Each one costs $10.99, stands 3.75 inches tall, are made of vinyl, and will ship in November 2020.

Funko TMNT Movie Raph

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA FUNKOS

Our favorite Heroes in a Half-Shell are getting the Pop! treatment. Based on the hit classic 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, these vinyl figures stand 3.75 inches tall and comes in window box packaging, making them great for display. Each one costs $10.99 and ships in November 2020. Available in the wave are Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Casey Jones. Anytime the TMNT movie is mentioned, I have to make a hopeful wish to the stars that some day, we will get a toy (Pop! or otherwise) of Raphael passed out in the bathtub. You know, like a Pop! Ride but a bath. Raphael in his trench coat disguise and hat is welcome, too.

Funko Pop South Park

FUNK PARK

We’ve reached the end, my toy loving friends, and we’re going to wrap this issue of Important Toy News on a very high and very funny note. Funko and South Park are combining for a wave of six brand-new Pop! figures. Never to be basic with simple 3.75-inch figures of the main characters, this collection of South Park characters feature some very specific moments from the show’s long and hysterical history. Each figure costs $10.99 and ships IN November 2020. My favorite hands down is Awesom-O and I will be adding it to my collection post-haste. Other figures in the wave include Princess Kenny (extremely strong), Faith +1 Cartman, Shadow Hachi Stan, Butters as Marjorine (also a very strong one), and Jersey Kyle.
