Next Ghostbusters movie to be helmed by Ivan's son, Jason Reitman
Praise Gozer the Gozerian, Volguus Zildrohar, and Lord of the Sebouillia, because it looks like there's an all-new Ghostbusters movie on the horizon.
According to Variety, Jason Reitman will continue the tradition started by his father, Ivan, and helm the next big-screen Ghostbusters adventure. The Front Runner director has already penned a script with Gil Kenan, who directed the Poltergeist remake back in 2015.
Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters films, will produce the film via his production banner, Montecito Pictures. A true father-son tradition being passed down, and it could mean Ivan's dream of a shared Ghostbusters universe is closer to coming true.
Details of the new movie's plot are being kept in a containment unit for now, but sources say the story will be a continuation of 1989's Ghostbusters II and will ignore the 2016 reboot from director Paul Feig. Things were so secretive that Sony Pictures brought Jason in covertly to work out the specifics, even using a fake title for the film to avoid any word being leaked to the public.
It's not yet known if any of the film's surviving cast members will be reprising their roles — though it's a safe assumption that Dan Aykroyd would be happy to do it. Ernie Hudson also seems like a potential yes, while Bill Murray has been notoriously coy on the topic for a number of years. All three actors had bit parts as different characters in the 2016 reboot starring Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. Harold Ramis, who both starred in and co-wrote the first two films with Aykroyd, passed away in 2016.
Though the most recent female-fronted Ghostbusters wasn't exactly a hit with audiences (or with critics), getting another franchise installment off the ground has been a priority for Sony Pictures.
The upcoming Ghostbusters sequel will also be the first big-budget film for the younger Reitman. The filmmaker has mostly tackled smaller-scale, story-centric films like Juno, Up in the Air, and last year's ode to motherhood, Tully, all of which were critically acclaimed.
