Knuckles goes full Winter Soldier in Super Bowl teaser for 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2'
If you're tuning into the Big Game, don't be surprised when Sonic and Knuckles speed in.
One of the biggest video game movie hits in history is back for more, and the Super Bowl this Sunday night will bring a fresh look at Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in all its super-speeding glory.
Paramount Pictures and SEGA have released the new teaser ahead of the Big Game this weekend, showing off some fresh footage of how Sonic’s second adventure will up the ante as Dr. Robotnik (Jm Carrey) enlists the assistance of Knuckles (Idris Elba) to neutralize all that blurry super-speed. Along with Knuckles, the film also features the full-fledged debut of Sonic’s beloved sidekick Tails — a point the Super Bowl ad leans into pretty hard. Football games do require a heads-or-tails coin flip, after all.

As for the story this time around, the sequel picks up with Sonic after he has settled down in Green Hills and is trying his hand at learning to be a hero. But when Dr. Robotnik returns from the other dimension he was dumped in at the end of the first movie, things get real when Sonic realizes he can’t just outrun Robotnik’s new super-powered partner Knuckles. The baddies are on the hunt for a mysterious emerald with the power to destroy entire civilizations. So yeah, not exactly something you’d want to hand-over to the super-sized mustache-twirling villain.
The film stars James Marsden, Idris Elba, Ben Schwartz (returning as the voice of Sonic), Jim Carrey, Adam Pally, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Lee Majdoub, Shemar Moore, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is directed by Jeff Fowler.
As for what fans can expect from the Super Bowl, the face off between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals kicks off Sunday night on NBC and streaming on Peacock. We can expect trailers from Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series and Jordan Peele’s next horror movie Nope. Other likely options include Jurassic World: Dominion, Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Moon Knight.
