Star Trek: Lower Decks has a bat'leth accident in extended sneak peek at Comic-Con@Home panel

Star Trek is about to go where its never gone before: animated comedy. Thanks to Star Trek: Lower Decks, the upcoming CBS All Access show about those unsung heroes of Starfleet zipping through space in the "lower decks" of the U.S.S. Cerritos, the massive Trek universe is taking a swift left turn into sci-fi silliness. Taking place in 2390, right after Star Trek: Nemesis, Lower Decks looks to bring the franchise into a new genre while maintaining all the geeky goodness that has made it one of the quintessential genre properties. And, at Comic-Con@Home, fans got to see a nice long clip from the show's first episode.

Lower Decks' creator, showrunner, and executive producer Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty) stopped by Comic-Con@Home alongside his massive crew — clownish Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), nerdy Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), "fresh eyes" Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells), cyborg Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell), Lieutenant Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore), and Dr. T’Ana (Gillian Vigman) — for a Q&A panel with a bit of a treat for fans: an extended sneak peek at the series premiere featuring one of the franchise's most iconic weapons.

We can't all be doing captain's logs — even when we're handling second contact. With references to Klingon weapons (a bat'leth accident is very, very serious) and more, the show looks to be catnip for Trekkies. Opposed to the A-list all-stars running the ship from the bridge, the nerds down in the depths struggle with a very different set of problems during the conventional sci-fi plots.

The voice cast then described their various characters — from the strict and demeritless goodie-two-shoes Ensign Brad Boimler to the "roughest bedside manner" of the catlike Dr. T’Ana — and talked about fun parts of the series. Quaid promised fans loads of holodeck fun in the future, saying "I know we got a lot of cool mileage out of that during our season." The actor also teases that fans meet Boimler's girlfriend during the first season, which was his favorite to record: "This guy, in any kind of romantic scenario, is just hilarious to me."

Tons of spoilers — bleeped out to keep fans happy during their viewing — followed. The Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead-esque antics of these sci-fi side characters only look to get stranger as the first season goes on - thanks in part to its creative team's Adult Swim bonafides.

Star Trek: Lower Decks hits CBS All Access on Aug. 6.
