Star Trek: Discovery co-creator quashes rumors that Kirk will appear on the show anytime soon
Oh, Alex Kurtzman. First he giveth, then he taketh away. In the same interview with The Hollywood Reporter where the Star Trek: Discovery co-creator and executive producer promises Trek fans an animated series (as well as a couple new shorts), he also dashes their hopes by nipping any rumors of Captain Kirk appearing in his popular series in the bud.
With the second season of Discovery set to return in mere days, fans speculated on whether they could expect to see the famed captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise James T. Kirk, played by the actor who originated the role, William Shatner; or by newcomer Chris Pine; or (most likely) by someone new altogether. After all, they’ve been promised Spock. Heck, even Shatner himself is down with the idea of his famed character making an appearance.
Alas, according to Kurtzman, there are currently no plans for Discovery to introduce the iconic character.
"There's a 10-year gap between where we are in Discovery and Kirk's arrival on the Enterprise. There would [have to] be a major time jump if we were going to do something like that,” Kurtzman told the media outlet. “What Kirk was doing at this particular time is another question, but we don’t have any immediate plans [for the character]," Kurtzman said. "I have not spoken to Shatner about it."
Yes, Trek fans, this is some sad news. Still, there's no reason to drink yourself into a stupor over the revelation, Trek fans. You’re still getting a new season of Discovery that includes a young Spock. You’re still getting two animated series. You're still getting a Picard series. And you still may get your favorite OG Starfleet captain sometime down the road. It’s just not looking like it’s going to happen in the immediate future.
And, hey. Maybe not getting everything that we want is a good thing. What was it that Spock would say? “After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but is often true.”
The (Kirk-free) second season of Discovery returns to CBS All Access Thursday, January 17.
