Sony Pictures CEO on future of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise: 'The reality is nothing is set'

Another Spidey-based trilogy with Holland in the title role isn't as set in stone as we were led to believe.

Tom Holland's future as Spider-Man may not be as assured as producer Amy Pascal made it out to be. Chatting with Variety on the red carpet of the No Way Home world premiere in Los Angeles earlier this week, Sony Pictures CEO and Chairman Tom Rothman was asked about recent comments Pascal had made about another wall-crawling trilogy with Holland in the lead role currently in development at the studio.

"I will confirm that my dear sister-in-arms, Amy, is a very optimistic person. That's what I will confirm," said Rothman in a very diplomatic answer that danced around the question at hand (after all, he is a veteran Hollywood pro). "The reality is no, nothing is set; nothing has been determined. But, on the other hand, everything is still possible."

During an interview with People, Holland expressed interest in seeing a more diverse roster of Spider-People. "Maybe you have a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman," the actor explained. "We've had three Spider-Mans in a row; we've all been the same. It'd be nice to see something different."

He continued: "I've spent the last six years being so focused on my career. I want to take a break and focus on starting a family and figuring out what I want to do outside of this world."

Even with Holland taking a break from the position of New York's friendly neighborhood vigilante, fans still have plenty of Spidey-related content to look forward to — be it Morbius (out Jan. 29 after more than a year of delays), Across the Spider-Verse (Part One swings into theaters everywhere next October), or a television spinoff for Silk (hailing from Spider-Verse produces Phil Lord and Chris Miller).

"I've loved every minute of it. I've been so grateful to Marvel and Sony for giving us the opportunity and keeping us on and allowing our characters to progress. It's been amazing," Holland told People. "And that's why for me, I don't want to say goodbye to Spider-Man — but I feel like we might be ready to say goodbye to Spider-Man."

The actor went one step further, hinting that it might be time for him to pass the web-slinging torch onto the next Peter Parker. "I don't want to be responsible for holding back the next young person that comes in who deserves it just as much."

After months of feverish anticipation, Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives on the big screen tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 17).

We've seen the movie in its entirety and let's just say every second of it will make you cry, laugh, gasp in shock — or perhaps all three at the same time. If this really is the end of the (silk) road for Holland, viewers can rest assured that he went out swinging with one of the best and most satisfying trilogy cappers you're likely to find this side of the multiverse.
