Chili dogs for all! Ben Schwartz is back as the voice of SEGA's blue speedster in the very first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Jeff Fowler returns to direct the follow-up to 2020's smash video game adaptation, which brought in almost $320 million at the global box office just prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Naturally a sequel was inevitable, especially since the first movie teased the introduction of other beloved Sonic characters like Tails, the flying fox (Colleen O'Shaughnessey). “[T]he idea that we made this whole movie, and we didn't have a single scene of Sonic and Tails together. It's incredible,” Fowler told SYFY WIRE. “But it also is so exciting [for a sequel].”

Over the summer, it was confirmed that Idris Elba was joining the follow-up as the voice of Knuckles the Echidna. And, of course, the story wouldn't be complete without Jim Carrey's megalomaniacal Doctor Ivo Robotnik. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are also reprising their live-action roles, as Tom and Maddie Wachowski.

Watch the trailer now:

Production on the follow-up began in Hawaii earlier this year before wrapping three months later at the end of June. Schwartz introduced the new trailer at Thursday's Game Awards alongside Carrey, who piped in via video to offer up a hilariously random diatribe before the trailer kicked in.

As the clip shows, the big-screen version of Knuckles makes a formidable furry foe for Sonic's second movie outing, so it's probably a good thing that Tails is on the case this time to help deliver a good ol' one-two knockout punch...or so we hope.
