M. Night Shyamalan gets 'Old' in first trailer for his next mysterious genre movie

Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan follows up Glass with Old, a new original genre flick based on Sandcastle, a French graphic novel by Pierre Oscar Levy and artist Frederik Peeters. Likened to the reality-bending antics of The Twilight Zone and Lost, the project follows a group of people who are unable to leave a beach after discovering a dead body. The characters soon learn a terribly dark secret as "Old" as time itself.

Though the first teaser that dropped during Sunday's Super Bowl LV game doesn't reveal too much of the plot, it definitely bears Shyamalan's signature slow-boil tension. Whatever mysterious force pervades the secluded beach, it’s causing the entire family to visibly age — though in true sci-fi tradition, none of them know exactly why. But it’s happening fast: each member of the group appears to be aging an entire lifetime in just one day…so time, of course, is of the essence.

Production on the film kicked off in the Dominican Republic in late September 2020, with the release of a teaser poster and a behind-the-scenes image of a mask-wearing Shyamalan (there's still a pandemic going on, after all) holding up a clapperboard. "Feels like a miracle that I am standing here shooting the first shot of my new film," the director wrote on Twitter. He produced the movie alongside Ashwin Rajan Marc Bienstock, and Steven Schneider.

Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle), Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Aaron Pierre (Krypton), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Abbey Lee (Lovecraft Country), Nikki Amuka-Bird (The Personal History of David Copperfield), Ken Leung (Inhumans), Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle), Embeth Davidtz (Ray Donovan), and Emun Elliott (Guilt) are all a part of the Old cast.

Old will begin to teach us young whippersnappers a lesson when it arrives in theaters from Universal Pictures Friday, July 23.
