Lucy Lawless on the time she had to double check to make sure she wasn’t in a Xena reboot
Say, have you heard about the latest Xena: Warrior Princess reboot? Well, neither has Lucy Lawless.
Say, have you heard about the latest Xena: Warrior Princess reboot? Well, neither has Lucy Lawless.
While there’s no official reboot anywhere on the horizon, that certainly hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning. So much so that Lawless recently heard such a reboot rumor while trying to get through customs, and she had to double check to make sure it wasn’t true. You know the buzz is heating up when Xena herself has to double check the details.
While speaking to SYFY WIRE about her wild new rotoscoped movie The Spine of Night, we couldn’t help but to ask Lawless if she’d heard any new rumblings of a Xena revival going on?
“Oh I don’t know. I came through customs the other day, and some woman recognized me from my passport and was like, ‘I heard they’re making a Xena reboot and I don’t want another Xena, we only want you!’” Lawless said. “I had to ring my husband and go, ‘Is that true? I just heard from a lady at immigration.’ I’m like, ‘You bastards didn’t tell me anything!’ Nope, not true, not as far as he knows.”
Of course, the idea of doing a reboot without Lawless would be borderline sacrilegious for most fans.
“Well, at least mentioning it to me,” joked Lawless. “Don’t let me hear it from the woman at immigration. I’ll be really pissed.”
Such speculation made us wonder just what would Xena would be up to these days, if given the opportunity. Lawless said she had thought about it before, and has a few ideas for where she thinks a new Xena story could take the franchise.
“I think what she would be doing is finding someone to hand the baton over to. That’s the natural thing, if they did include me in any Xena reboot, it would be about finding the next one for her to hand over the torch to,” Lawless said.
But does Lawless think she can still wield the sword a full 20 year later?
“I can wield [the sword],” she laughed, but noted, “I don’t think you want to see a 50-something-year-old woman in a bloody short skirt and boots, there’s a time and a place… swords are not the problem, brother!”
Think again Xena, think again.
