Keanu Reeves' new comic BRZRKR puts a spin on 'Sad Keanu' meme

Talk about drawing inspiration from yourself.

Now that Keanu Reeves is penning his first ever comic, BRZRKR, he's poking a little fun at himself by recreating the "Sad Keanu" meme that took the internet by storm a decade ago.

As fans of the John Wick star know all too well, the Sad Keanu meme got its start in 2010 on Reddit after someone posted a paparazzi photo of the actor looking miserable on a bench in New York while eating a sandwich. Inevitably, enterprising Netizens got a hold of it and the jokes spiraled from there with photoshopped variations popping up ad infinitum.

BOOM! Studios, the company publishing BRZRKR, has launched a Kickstarter for the project, which features an image of its titular hero looking dark and gloomy while, yep, sitting on a park bench, though in this version he's out in the rain. BRZRKR follows a half-mortal/half-God who bears a striking resemblance to Reeves as he metes out bloody justice while taking on the U.S. government's toughest and most dangerous assignments.

Given that Reeves reprised his role as Ted in the newly released comedy sequel in Bill & Ted Face the Music, he clearly has a sense of humor. And Venom scribe Donny Cates, who talked with the thesp early on about collaborating on the graphic novel, confirmed it when he tweeted that Reeves finds the whole Sad Keanu affair pretty funny.

And now the illustrated homage to his dour day in the Big Apple is officially a reality.

Reeves is co-writing the comic with Matt Kindt (Justice League of America, Folklords) and has teamed up with artist Ron Garney (Wolverine and Captain America), colorist Bill Crabtree (BPRD), and letterer Clem Robins (Hellboy). The high octane limited edition series has already met its Kickstarter goal of $50,000, and then some, with $222,000 pledged from 2,196 backers – and it still has 29 days to go.

If all goes well, BRZRKR will hit comic shops in 12 epic chapters starting in September 2021 – probably about the time we can expect an announcement that Reeves will be starring in the movie version .
