Gaming: Mortal Kombat reveals classic characters; RDR2 enters lawsuit; Stan Lee gets a WoW cameo

By Donnie Lederer
Red Dead Redemption II

From Scorpion to RDR2 to Stan Lee, we’ve got some more great bits from the world of gaming today.

Ahead of its official character reveal event on Jan. 17, the Mortal Kombat Twitter page revealed how three of its most popular characters will look in Mortal Kombat 11. Get over here and take a good look at Scorpion, Shao Khan, and Raiden from the latest entry in the famous fighting series.

Even though their basic design has remained the same over the years, the details appear to be getting better with each new game. Mortal Kombat 11 launches on both consoles and PC on April 23, 2019.

Pinkertons from Red Dead Redemption 2

It looks like the creators of Red Dead Redemption 2 will have to deal with not only the dangers of the Wild West, but the dangers of the courtroom as well. After receiving a cease-and-desist order from the security company Pinkerton for using its name within the game for Pinkerton agents (shown above), Take-Two Interactive is filing a counter complaint, citing use of the name falls under the First Amendment.

Pinkerton, founded in 1850 as the Pinkerton National Detective agency, has been used in other western fiction, such as Deadwood. According to the lawsuit, Take-Two states that “Historical fiction— television, movies, plays, books, and games — would suffer greatly if trademark claims like [Pinkerton’s] could even possibly succeed” and that “[Pinkerton] cannot use trademark law to own the past.”

Teen Titans Go! to the Movies proved that the late Stan Lee was not bogged down by “company loyalty” when it came to cameos. Blizzard Entertainment apparently knows how much “The Man” means to many people outside of Marvel, and decided to give Lee an in-game cameo. In one of its latest World of Warcraft updates, Blizzard has created an NPC named “Stanley” sporting an all-too-familiar hairstyle and mustache. If you follow Stanley around Stormwind (the Alliance capital), you might also see him utter a certain catchphrase.

The outpouring of love for Stan still warms the heart, don't you think?
