From Captain Marvel to The Twilight Zone: all the coolest trailers we saw during this year's Super Bowl
Tonight, Super Bowl LIII served as the unveiling for scores of new trailers for all the cool stuff we're excited to see in 2019. Also, there was a football game going on. Anyway, here's a look at some of the coolest trailers that aired tonight.
What were some of your favorite trailers of the night? Let us know in the comments.
Avengers: Endgame
We know that the Russo brothers are keeping as much of Avengers: Endgame under wraps as they can, and they proved it with this incredibly brief look at the conclusion to last year's Infinity War. Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark narrates the clip, insisting that the surviving Avengers aren't likely to back down, regardless of the threat. We also see Paul Rudd's Ant-Man suiting up next to Don Cheadle's War Machine, so they've clearly squashed their beef from their Civil War days in time to save the universe.
Avengers: Endgame will snap into theaters on April 26th.
Captain Marvel
Marvel might have been playing it close to the vest with Endgame, but it went all out with the new Captain Marvel spot. Here, Brie Larson's eponymous hero tells us all to "try and keep up," while she goes farther, further, and faster than any other trailer we've gotten a look at so far. We also saw some snippets of new footage, but it was the most kinetic and explosive new trailer that's been released for the 90s-set MCU film.
Captain Marvel hits theaters on May 3rd, just under a month away.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
Last night we got not one, but four teasers for producer Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Alvin Schwartz' classic book series Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Three came online, while the fourth was revealed during the game itself. From the look of things, director André Øvredal's film will look very familiar to those familiar with the books. And Stephen Gammell's unnerving illustrations. You can check out the other three teasers here, here, and here.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will haunt theaters starting August 9th.
Alita: Battle Angel
Director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron have joined forces to adapt to bring Alita: Battle Angel to the big screen — complete with star Rosa Salazar and her very large eyes. The future-set sci-fi spectacle is promising over-the-top visuals, and last night's trailer even pushed audiences to see it in IMAX or 3D to help get the full effect of what Rodriguez has put on screen. One thing's for sure, Alita is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Alita: Battle Angel storms into theaters Feb. 14 — just in time for Valentine's Day!
Toy Story 4
At the end of the game, Disney/Pixar snuck in a new look at the upcoming Toy Story 4. The film looks to be something of a road-trip adventure for Andy and Bonnie, while Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is busy being stuck against the wall as a carnival prize. He's also being teased by Bunny and Ducky, who are voiced by Keegan Michael-Kay and Jordan Peele, so he's clearly not having the best time with things.
Toy Story 4 will open in theaters June 21.
The Handmaid's Tale
What started like your average, middle-of-the-road car commercial promising "it's morning in America" quickly turned dark as it was revealed we were getting a glimpse of the third season of The Handmaid's Tale. The hit Hulu series will continue to follow Offred (Elisabeth Moss), who elected to stay in Gilead last year. By the look of things, her and the rest of the Handmaids are ready to fight back.
There's no official premiere date yet for season three, but Hulu is promising it will be "soon."
The Twilight Zone
Speaking of subversive trailers, the first spot for The Twilight Zone made it look like it was hijacking the Super Bowl's feed itself. Amid the static and chaos, new showrunner Jordan Peele strolled across an empty football field and asked viewers questions about the dimensions of truth in true Serling-esque style.
The Twilight Zone will premiere on CBS All Access on April 1 — or will it? (No, seriously, it probably will).
Our Planet
After four years in the making, with 600 crew members filming in 50 countries around the world, Netflix finally gave us a glimpse at Our Planet. Narrated by David Attenborough, the new series will give viewers a never-before-filmed look at the planet’s remaining wilderness areas and their animal inhabitants.
Our Planet will premiere on Netflix on April 6.
Bud Light/Game of Thrones
Finally, on the cross-promotion front, Bud Light went to Westeros for a new Game of Thrones-inspired ad that featured none other than The Mountain himself (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson). The commercial harkened back to The Mountain's season one appearance at the famous jousting scene, as well as his unforgettably gruesome showdown with The Red Viper (Pablo Pascal) in season four. Then, of course, Drogon showed up breath fire on the whole scene, while reminding us that the final season of Game of Thrones is right around the corner.
The epic final season of Game of Thrones kicks off on April 14.
