Forgotten Women of Genre: Margaret Cavendish
March is Women's History Month. And while here on SYFY FANGRRLS we celebrate women's achievements throughout the year, we're going above and beyond for the upcoming month with a limited podcast series called Forgotten Women of Genre.
It's 2019 and we still have to contend with the dull and archaic stereotype that the science-fiction genre is a man's realm. The easiest way to smack down such nonsense is to remind people that the first science-fiction novel ever written was by a woman. More than 150 years before Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, there was another woman blazing the trail for this brave new genre. One multi-talented woman, a figure ahead of her time, helped to create the literary genre we adore so much to this day. She was a poet, a philosopher, a scientist, a philanthropist, a socialite, and a pioneering sci-fi author. Her place in history has been oft-maligned or dismissed, but we're here to give her her much-deserved due. Meet the Duchess of Newcastle, Margaret Cavendish.
Science fiction, fantasy, and all associated genres have finally evolved from a niche interest into a mainstream staple. But the women who have been instrumental in creating and shaping the nerdverse have largely gone unrecognized. Until today. Forgotten Women of Genre tells the stories of the women who helped some of the most famous fantasy worlds become a reality.
New episodes of this series will be released each day in the month of March, in addition to regularly scheduled episodes of STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS.
